Lattice-Gas Theory of Collective Diffusion in Adsorbed Layers

International Journal of Modern Physics B, 1997
A general theory for collective diffusion in interacting lattice-gas models is presented. The theory is based on the description of the kinetics in the lattice gas by a master equation. A formal solution of the master equation is obtained using the projection-operator technique, which gives an expression for the relevant correlation functions in terms

Anisotropic, effective diffusivity of porous gas diffusion layer materials for PEFC

Electrochimica Acta, 2008
A comparative, experimental diffusivity study of gas diffusion layer (GDL) materials for polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFC) is presented for the first time. The GDL plays an important role for electrochemical losses due to gas transport limitations at high current densities. Characterization and optimization of these layers is therefore essential to

Absolute permeability and Knudsen diffusivity measurements in PEMFC gas diffusion layers and micro porous layers

Journal of Power Sources, 2012
A novel approach for predicting absolute permeability and effective Knudsen diffusivity values in gas-diffusion-layers/microporous layers (GDLs/MPLs) is proposed. A conventional diffusion bridge setup with modifications is used to obtain the pressure drop across the GDL at several mass flow rates.

Water Transport in Gas Diffusion Layers of PEMFCs

ECS Transactions, 2006
We present an ex-situ analysis of water transport in the carbon paper gas diffusion layers for PEM fuel cells. We employ florescent imaging that allows us to distinguish liquid water from air through an optical microscope by seeding the water with fluorescent molecules.

Water Transport Mechanisms in PEMFC Gas Diffusion Layers

Journal of The Electrochemical Society, 2010
Understanding how water produced in the cathode catalyst layer is removed during proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) operation is critical for optimization of materials and model development. The present work combines in situ and ex situ experiments designed to elucidate the dominant water discharge mechanism when considering capillary and vapor

Electrochemical diffusimetry of fuel cell gas diffusion layers

Journal of Electroanalytical Chemistry, 2008
The gas diffusion layers (GDLs) of a membrane electrode assembly (MEA) serve as link between flow field and porous electrode within a polymer electrolyte fuel cell. Beside ensuring sufficient electrical and thermal contact between the whole electrode area and the flow field, these typically 200–400 μm thick porous structures enable the access of educts

Advanced Gas Diffusion Layers for PEM Fuel Cells

ECS Transactions, 2010
One of the most critical components for proper water management and catalyst functioning in the proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) is the Gas diffusion layer (GDL). This paper presents a preliminary study on advanced GDL performance characteristics in fuel cell environment.

A method to produce a gas diffusion layer and a fuel cell comprising a gas diffusion layer

2015
The present invention discloses a method of manufacturing gas diffusion layers (GDL) with a defined pattern of hydrophobic and hydrophilic regions. The method to produce electrically conductive porous materials with distributed wettability comprises the steps of: a) Coating the external and internal surfaces of a porous base material made of carbon ...
