Journal of Fermentation Technology, 1987Abstract Results from studies of membrane gas sensors are presented to show their general applicability to fermentation monitoring of volatiles, such as alcohols, organic acids, and aldehydes under various process and reactor conditions. Mainly the silicone tubing methods is described, with examples from ethanolic fermentation.

Oxygen and carbon dioxide levels in gas-liquid equilibria affect productivity and energy consumption in such processes and appear to be implicated in the regulation of microbial metabolism.
