The Lift Gas Cracker is a new method for extending the duration of high-altitude scientific balloon flights and for enabling the launch of balloons from remote locations. The Lift Gas Cracker produces balloon lift gas by catalytic steam reforming of methanol to generate hydrogen plus carbon dioxide.

Gas absorption in narrow gas lifts

Abstract Carbon dioxide from a mixture of CO 2 N 2 has been absorbed by water in gas lifts of 0·48 and 0·238 cm inside diameter, 0·5 and 1·0 m long. The liquid phase resistance to mass transfer, which is predominant, has been calculated by a fundamental theory.
