Advanced gas metal arc welding processes

The International Journal of Advanced Manufacturing Technology, 2012
There is an increased requirement in the automotive, food and medical equipment industries to weld heat-sensitive materials, such as thin sheets, coated thin plates, stainless steel, aluminium and mixed joints. Nevertheless, relevant innovations in arc welding are not widely known and seldom used to their maximum potential. In the area of gas metal arc

Metal Transfer and Arc Plasma in Gas Metal Arc Welding

Journal of Heat Transfer, 2006
This article analyzes the transient complex heat transfer and fluid flow in molten metal and arc plasma during the gas metal arc welding process. The model predicts the formation, growth, detachment, and transfer of droplets from the tip of a continuously fed electrode under the influences of several competing forces including gravity, electromagnetic ...

Control of pulsed gas metal arc welding

International Journal of Modelling, Identification and Control, 2006
This paper presents a control system for manual pulsed Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW). This system consists of a current controller, which makes it possible to shape the current during welding, and two important components, which are the key issues discussed in this paper. These components include an arc length controller and a metal transfer controller.

Metal transfer measurements in gas metal arc welding

Journal of Physics D: Applied Physics, 2001
The present work reports results obtained using combined laser shadowing and cross correlation techniques to investigate the metal transfer process. Experimental results of the droplet size and velocity of 0.9 mm and 1.2 mm wires from the globular region to the spray transfer region are presented.

Arc Interruptions in Tandem Pulsed Gas Metal Arc Welding

Journal of Manufacturing Science and Engineering, 2015
In addition to electromagnetic attraction between the arcs in Tandem Pulsed gas metal arc welding (GMAW), arc interruptions, mostly in the trailing arc at low mean current levels, may also occur, which is a phenomenon not widely discussed in the welding field.

Arc Behavior of Dry Hyperbaric Gas Metal Arc Welding

Advanced Materials Research, 2014
The arc behavior in dry hyperbaric Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) process was investigated by using a high speed camera system and welding electric signal acquisition system. The arc shape in hyperbaric argon environment of 0.1-2MPa shows quite different characteristic from that at normal pressure.

Gas-Metal Arc Welding

1993
Abstract Gas-metal arc welding (GMAW) is an arc welding process that joins metals together by heating them with an electric arc that is established between a consumable electrode (wire) and a workpiece. This article discusses the advantages and limitations, operating principle, metal transfer mechanisms, and process variables of the GMAW

Welding seam tracking in robotic gas metal arc welding

Journal of Materials Processing Technology, 2017
Abstract In order to improve the welding quality of robotic gas metal arc welding (GMAW), a welding system for seam tracking is developed based on a purpose-built vision sensor. By analyzing the features of robotic GMAW, a novel software program is developed for welding seam tracking.
