Mercury in ambient air: a review on sources, speciation, legislation and measurement methods

open access: yesAsian Journal of Atmospheric Environment
Mercury being a neurotoxin poses great threat to the human health as well as environment. It is emitted into the atmosphere through both natural and anthropogenic sources and can travel long distances over time before being scavenged and deposited in the

Formation and fate of oxidized mercury in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere

open access: yes, 2012
Mercury contamination affects many aquatic ecosystems1. The atmosphere is the main transport route for this toxicant2. According to aircraft measurements, the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere are depleted in gaseous elemental mercury3, 4 but ...

Underground Signals: The Ecological Power of Root Volatiles

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Root volatiles mediate rhizosphere chemical communication, shaping interactions among plants, microbes, herbivores, and natural enemies. Their production, transport, and perception underpin ecological adaptation, multitrophic interactions, and plant resilience, offering opportunities for sustainable crop protection, resilient agroecosystems, and ...

The use of fly ash to stabilise low concentrations of mercury in the environment

open access: yes, 2010
The work investigates if fly ash from Ekibatuz Power Plant can stabilise low concentrations of mercury in the environment and prevent it from becoming soluble in water and in preventing it transforming into the methylated form. The work demonstrates that

Deposition and Reduction of Oxidized Mercury on the Ice Surface: Quantum-Chemical Study and Implication of Mercury Activities in the Arctic

open access: yes, 2023
Mercury is released into the atmosphere as atomic Hg(0) where it is oxidized under ultraviolet light to form oxidized mercury molecules such as XHgY, BrHgOX, BrHgXO, XHgOH, XHgO2H, and XHgNO2, where X and Y represent Cl, Br, and I atoms.

Harnessing Phase Separation for the Development of High‐Performance Hydrogels

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Hydrogels are indispensable for the development of next‐generation bioelectronics, soft robotics, and biomedical devices, where their mechanical properties determine performance and reliability. Among strategies to enhance hydrogel mechanics, phase separation enables controlled heterogeneity resulting in gel networks that are reinforced by ...

Binding-Time Analysis for Mercury [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
In this work, we develop a binding-time analysis for the logic programming language Mercury. We introduce a precise domain of binding-times, based on the type information available in Mercury programs, that allows the analyser to reason with partially ...

Study on the Reaction Mechanism of RuOx and Its Enhanced Hydrogen Evolution Reaction Activity

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
In situ Raman spectroscopy and DFT calculations reveal that, prior to the onset of HER, the surface of RuOx undergoes reversible reduction and structural reconstruction. The resulting Ru(II)O/Ru(IV)O2 configuration is identified as the true catalytically active species.

Hazards of Mercury – Safety Perspectives and Measures

open access: yesChemical Engineering Transactions, 2015
Mercury is one of the most hazardous contaminants emitted to the atmosphere due to its toxic effects on the environment and human health. Anthropogenic and geological sources account for 30 % and 10 % respectively, whereas the rest is from re-emissions ...
