The three stimulants of gastric acid secretion likely to have physiological roles in regulation of secretion are acetylcholine, gastrin, and histamine. Acetylcholine is released by vagal and intramucosal reflex stimulation, acting directly on the parietal cell.

Early in the war Willcox1reported that, of 41 soldiers evacuated from France and complaining of dyspepsia, 19 had duodenal ulcers and 7 had gastric ulcers. He expressed the belief that the ulcer had existed in most cases prior to enlistment and that conditions in the service had caused a relapse.
