AbstractGastropods comprise the second largest metazoan taxon, with about 60,000 to 80,000 living species occupying ecological niches covering the globe. Anatomy, behaviour, and development vary significantly between Patellogastropoda, Vetigastropoda, Neritimorpha, Caenogastropoda, and Heterobranchia.

Los gastrópodos constituyen una clase muy variada y numerosa de moluscos, calculándose que representan alrededor del 80% de estos últimos. El número estimado de especies vivientes oscila, según los autores, entre 40000 y más de 100000, mientras que los fósiles se hallarían en unos 15000.

Among 53 species, reviewed here under zoogeograhic and ecological viewpoints, numerous are for the first time recorded for Central Moldovian Highland and for Republic of Moldova (Serrulina serrulcita, Balea biplicata, Discus perspectivus, Perforalella dibo thrion, Monachioides vicina, Vitrea diaphana, Oxychilus glaber, Derocercas turcicum).

Based on the geographical distribution of marine gastropods, a new Sarmatian Biohermal Province is suggested for the Sarmatian Zoogeographic Region. The geographical limits of this province correspond to the distribution of bryozoan reefs in the Bessarabian Basin (Middle Sarmatian).
