Improvement of PEFC Performance by Removing GDLs

To reduce the cost and size of a polymer electrolyte fuel cell (PEFC), we propose removing the gas diffusion layers (GDLs) from the cell. Removing the GDLs improves the gas supply to the catalyst layer. On the other hand, it is possible that removing the GDLs will lower the performance of the PEFC via flooding or dry-out. Gas Diffusion Layer (GDL)

The GDL is important part of polymer electrolyte membrane PEM and direct methanol DM fuel cell. There are two gas diffusion layers (cathode and anode sides) which as the name suggests diffuse reactant gases to the catalyst layer (of the electrolyte membrane).
