ABSTRACT Piscirickettsia salmonis , the causal agent of salmonid rickettsial septicemia (SRS), is the main pathogen affecting farmed salmonids in Chile. Outbreaks of SRS lead to substantial economic losses for producers. Many determinants related to SRS outcomes are still poorly understood.

Molecular insights into electroreceptor ribbon synapses from differential gene expression in sturgeon lateral line organs

The expression of various genes involved in synapse development, stability and/or function was studied in developing mechanosensory neuromasts and electrosensory ampullary organs in sterlet sturgeon. Most were shared, including Slc17a8, Slc1a3 and Nrxn3, but Cbln18 was neuromast‐restricted and Tulp1 was ampullary organ‐restricted.

Summary In tropical mountains, surviving temperature extremes demands finely tuned strategies. We investigated how populations of the bromeliad Pitcairnia flammea across a 2200 m elevational gradient balance genetic canalization and plasticity, and whether thermal strategies are coordinated between seeds and leaves.
