Effects of selective harvest on antler size of white‐tailed deer in Texas, USA

open access: yesWildlife Monographs, Volume 222, Issue 1, June 2026.
We conducted 20 years of experiments on the selective harvest of white‐tailed deer by antler size, judged inferior, in 2 areas of South Texas, USA. Selective harvest increased the phenotypic antler size of older males in one study area but not the other. There was little evidence of evolution resulting from selective harvesting. Abstract There has been

Functional divergence drives the prevalence of low‐abundance species in bat assemblages

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, Volume 40, Issue 6, Page 1587-1602, June 2026.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Ecological communities are structured by a few common species, while most occur at low abundance. Understanding the drivers of this widespread pattern raises fundamental questions about community assembly rules and is important for applied ecology for identifying ...

Long‐term warming drives mineral‐associated organic carbon accumulation on the Tibetan Plateau

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, Volume 40, Issue 6, Page 1809-1821, June 2026.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Global warming affects both plant growth and soil microbial decomposition, creating uncertainty for the storage and persistence of soil organic carbon (SOC) stock. Limited decomposition rates often characterise cold alpine ecosystems.

Occurrence of a Cavity‐Nesting Tropical Swallow Is Associated to Riverbed Lithology

open access: yesAustral Ecology, Volume 51, Issue 6, June 2026.
ABSTRACT Understanding the factors shaping species distribution is a key challenge in ecology and biogeography. While dispersal limitations, environmental features, and biotic interactions are commonly recognized as key determinants of species abundance and distribution, some species exhibit patchy distributions that remain hard to explain.

Mitochondrial Transplantation as a New Therapeutic Approach Against Cardiac and Renal Consequences in Male Rats With Myocardial Infarction

open access: yesActa Physiologica, Volume 242, Issue 6, June 2026.
ABSTRACT Aim Myocardial infarction (MI) is one of the leading causes of death worldwide. MI is associated with cardiac structural and functional alterations. Among these, cardiac fibrosis may be significantly influenced by mitochondrial dysfunction. We sought to evaluate whether the injection of functional mitochondria from healthy muscle could improve
