Disturbance-generated competitive coexistence
2023Abstract Explaining how competing species coexist remains a challenge in ecology. A major hypothesis is that disturbance opens up the opportunity for types with different “life history” strategies to coexist, allowing types better at getting to and using recently disturbed patches to coexist with better competitor types.

On the generation and maintenance of atmospheric disturbances
Advances in Atmospheric Sciences, 1984Blocking is one of the intensive atmospheric disturbances which can maintain for a long time. In this paprer we investigate the general conditions favorable for the generation and maintenance of the intensive disturbances. First, the evolutional process of disturbances superimposed on a jet-like zonal flow is studied by using the wave-packet ...

General Approaches to Behavioral Disturbances
2009Abstract Careful surveys have documented that 90% or more of nursing home patients have at least one form of behavioral disturbance, with as many as half exhibiting four or more (Rovner et al., 1986; Tariot et al., 1993). In some cases, the severity of these behavioral syndromes is equivalent to that encountered among psychiatric ...

Tropical disturbances and the general circulation
Quarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, 1972AbstractThe role of the Tropics in the general circulation of the atmosphere is discussed, with emphasis on the rising branch of the Hadley cell. The rising motion takes place largely in organized tropical disturbances and in the Intertropical Convergence Zone.

DEG: A Disturbance Event Generator for GCBM
2018This document describes a disturbance event generator (DEG) software framework and prototype implementation, which generates spatially explicit disturbance input data for the GCBM carbon budget simulation model.

A Generalized Error Component Model with Heteroscedastic Disturbances
International Economic Review, 1988This paper generalizes the one-way error component model from the homoskedastic to the heteroskedastic case. Unlike P. Mazodier and A. Trognon's (1978) heteroskedastic two-way error component model, an explicit form for V11/2 is obtained that allows the computation of generalized least squares as a simple modification of J. A.

Feedback residual generator with decoupled faults and disturbances
2008 American Control Conference, 2008We develop a new residual generator design which decouples the faults and disturbances in a linear time-invariant system. The decoupling is achieved using feedback to endow the residual generator with additional robustness to modeling errors and disturbances. We provide feasibility conditions for feedback decoupling.

Development and Testing of a Deterministic Disturbance Generator
10th AIAA/CEAS Aeroacoustics Conference, 2004*† A computerized gust generator has been developed and tested for the Virginia Tech Stability Wind Tunnel. The generator consists of 10 airfoil section vanes spanning from the top to the bottom of the tunnel contraction. Computer controlled stepper motors drive the vanes independently to create deterministic disturbances.
