On Generalizations of the Newton-Raphson-Simpson Method

open access: yes, 2019
We present generalizations of the Newton-Raphson-Simpson method. Specifically, for a positive integer $m$ and the sequence of coefficients of a Taylor series of a function $f(z)$, we define an algorithm we denote by NRS($m$) which is a way to evaluate, in our terminology, a sum of $m$ formal zeros of $f(z)$.

Measurement error, GLMs, and notational conventions

open access: yes
This paper introduces additive measurement error in a generalized linear-model context. We discuss the types of measurement error along with their effects on fitted models.

Semismooth Support Vector Machines

open access: yes, 2000
The linear support vector machine can be posed as a quadratic pro- gram in a variety of ways. In this paper, we look at a formulation using the two-norm for the misclassi cation error that leads to a positive de - nite quadratic program with a single ...

A Geometrically Regularized Gradient‐Damage Model With Orthogonality‐Based Energy Split for Dynamic Anisotropic Compression‐Shear Fracture

open access: yesInternational Journal for Numerical and Analytical Methods in Geomechanics, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This study proposes a novel geometrically regularized gradient‐damage model for simulating dynamic mixed‐mode fracture in orthotropic materials with tension–compression asymmetry. In this model, a thermodynamic framework is formulated by incorporating damage dissipation into internal energy evolution, from which the constitutive relation and ...

Generalized Newton Methods for Crack Problems with Non-Penetration Condition

open access: yes, 2003
A class of semismooth Newton methods for unilaterally constrained variational problems modelling cracks under a non-penetration condition are introduced and investigated.

Fruit use and fruit processing by euphonias, specialized avian frugivores

open access: yesOikos, EarlyView.
Euphonias (Neotropical passerines in the genera Euphonia and Chlorophonia) form the quintessential example of a specialized avian frugivore, combining a high reliance on fruit as food and the restriction of fruit taxa exploited. To understand their specialization, we explored the integration of fruit morphological and nutritional traits with their ...

Global analysis of annual survival among shorebirds reveals a negative effect of migration distance and a decline in recent decades

open access: yesOikos, EarlyView.
Annual survival is a key demographic parameter driving population trends in wildlife populations. However, despite numerous species‐specific or regional studies, global reviews of the factors affecting the survival of declining taxa remain scarce. Here, we investigated annual survival of fledged immature and adult shorebirds, a globally‐distributed and

Armijo Newton Method for Convex Best Interpolation

open access: yes, 2002
More than a decade agao, Newton's method has been proposed for constructing the convex best interpolant. Its local quadratic convergence has only been established recently by recasting it as the generalized Newton method for semismooth equations. It

Experimental and Modeling Investigation of Seawater Hydrolysis Effects on Aramid Fiber Rupture Behavior

open access: yesJournal of Polymer Science, EarlyView.
Hydrolytic aging in seawater produces markedly different mechanical responses among commercial Aramid fibers. While some fibers exhibit progressive degradation, others maintain stable or even improved tensile behavior. Experimental yarn‐scale testing combined with mathematical degradation modeling and Arrhenius‐based lifetime prediction provides new ...
