This requires a screening procedure, the BPE being sufficient in the majority of cases. Detailed examination is, however, required in more advanced or severe cases.

The Journal of the American Dental Association, 1987Clinical studies have shown that nonsurgical treatment is a highly effective method of periodontal therapy. It can be instituted in both shallow and deep pockets; however, an objective evaluation of post-scaling soft tissue changes should be recorded to determine the response to therapy.

[Epidemiology of generalized periodontal atrophy].
Stomatologie der DDR, 19901378 individuals of 15-44 years of age were examined for atrophic processes of the periodontia. 11% of the individuals showed typical inflammation - free gingival recession. Great importance must be attributed the McCall's festooms and the wedge shaped defects in cervical enamel, dentin or cement.

The Journal of the Michigan Dental Association, 2010Questionnaire data were collected from 160 MDA members. The data showed that 16 percent of the respondents had not made a periodontal referral during the last month, 67 percent had made one to five referrals, 7 percent between six and 10 referrals, and 10 percent referred more than 10 patients.
