High energy and high intensity electron and X-ray beams by pyroelectric effect [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
The production of x-rays has been a useful technique in many areas of science, medicine and various industries for over 100 years. Over this time various new methods of generating x-rays have been produced, allowing improved performance in existing ...

The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.

Efficient near-infrared supercontinuum generation in tellurite holey fiber pumped 320nm within the normal dispersion regime [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
We demonstrate the generation of a 1.1-1.7µm supercontinuum in a 1.3m long air suspended-core tellurite holey-fiber with a nominal zero-dispersion wavelength of ~1.38µm. The fiber is pumped at 1.06µm with a 20ps pulsed fiber laser.

The planar cell polarity protein Vangl2 interacts with the PDZ‐domains of Scribble but not with a unique PDZ‐like domain in Inturned

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Structural and biochemical characterisations show that the planar cell polarity (PCP) protein Inturned harbours a unique PDZ‐like domain that does not bind canonical PDZ‐binding motifs (PBMs) like that of another PCP protein Vangl2. In contrast, the apical‐basal polarity protein Scribble contains four PDZ domains that bind Vangl2, but one PDZ domain ...

Tau acetylation at K331 has limited impact on tau pathology in vivo

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We mapped tau post‐translational modifications in humanized MAPT knock‐in mice and in amyloid‐bearing double knock‐in mice. Acetylation within the repeat domain, particularly around K331, showed modest increases under amyloid pathology. To test functional relevance, we generated MAPTK331Q knock‐in mice.

Generational similarities in work values of generations X, Y and Z

open access: yesJournal of Human Resource Management, 2019
Human resources professionals (HRPs) must understand generational work values to lead organizations. While this study acknowledges the generations’ differences in work values throughout the academic literature, its purpose is to identify the ...

Correlates of disappointment in a relationship of generations X, Y, Z: behavioural inhibition/activation system and sense of coherence

open access: yesJournal of Modern Science
Objectives The issue of mutual references, relationships and their quality is the centre of studies dealing with marriage and family. Fertility decline, increased number of divorces, increased expectations related to interpersonal relationships and at ...

Career choices for generation X [PDF]

open access: yesBMJ, 1995
Young doctors want flexible career paths, not long term commitments Young doctors are not choosing to train or settle in general practice as they did a decade ago, which has serious implications for training schemes and practices recruiting new partners. Changes in the NHS may partly explain this.

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.
