Genetic Diversity and the Origins of Cultural Fragmentation [PDF]

open access: yesSSRN Electronic Journal, 2013
The origin of the uneven distribution of ethnic and cultural fragmentation across countries has been underexplored, despite the importance attributed to the effects of diversity on the stability and prosperity of nations. Building on the role of deeply-rooted biogeographical forces in comparative development, this research empirically demonstrates ...

Crop genetic erosion: understanding and responding to loss of crop diversity.

open access: yesNew Phytologist, 2021
Crop diversity underpins the productivity, resilience, and adaptive capacity of agriculture. Loss of this diversity, termed crop genetic erosion, is therefore concerning. While alarms regarding evident declines in crop diversity have been raised for over

Genetic diversity of noroviruses in Brazil [PDF]

open access: yesMemórias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz, 2011
Norovirus (NoV) infections are a major cause of acute gastroenteritis outbreaks around the world. In Brazil, the surveillance system for acute diarrhoea does not include the diagnosis of NoV, precluding the ability to assess its impact on public health. The present study assessed the circulation of NoV genotypes in different Brazilian states by partial

Genetic Diversity and Conservation Units: Dealing With the Species-Population Continuum in the Age of Genomics

open access: yesFrontiers in Ecology and Evolution, 2018
Current approaches to biodiversity conservation are largely based on geographic areas, ecosystems, ecological communities and species, with less attention ongenetic diversity and the evolutionary continuum from populations to species.

Geographic variation in walking activity in the red flour beetle Tribolium castaneum

open access: yesPopulation Ecology, EarlyView.
This study examined whether there is geographic variation in field populations, focusing on the moving activity in the red flour beetle Tribolium castaneum. Results showed significant differences in moving activity among field populations but no correlation with latitude or meteorological factors.

Extensive Ethnolinguistic Diversity in Vietnam Reflects Multiple Sources of Genetic Diversity

open access: yesbioRxiv, 2019
Vietnam features extensive ethnolinguistic diversity and occupies a key position in Mainland Southeast Asia (MSEA). Yet, the genetic diversity of Vietnam remains relatively unexplored, especially with genome-wide data, because previous studies have ...

Moving in the Dark: Enlightening the Spatial Population Ecology of European Cave Salamanders

open access: yesPopulation Ecology, EarlyView.
We assessed individual interactions, movement ecology and activity patterns of a subterranean population of Speleomantes strinatii, applying spatial capture–recapture modeling to a photographic dataset of 104 individuals. ABSTRACT Space use and movement are fundamental aspects of organisms' ecology, mirroring individual fitness, behavior, and life ...
