Operational gain: Measuring the capture of genetic gain

The Southern African Forestry Journal, 2002
Synopsis The southern African forestry and forest products industry contributes two percent of the countries gross domestic product, yet is one ofthe most globalised industrial sectors. Forest product exports make up eight percent of the countries total exports and produce an annual net trade surplus of R5 billion.

Continuing genetic improvement and biases in genetic gain estimates revealed in historical UK variety trials data [PDF]

open access: yesField Crops Research, 2023
Context The current pace of yield increase for major crops is not fast enough to meet future demand. Crop breeding programmes are under increasing pressure to improve existing crops further.

Genetic algorithm based gain scheduling

Proceedings of the 2002 Congress on Evolutionary Computation. CEC'02 (Cat. No.02TH8600), 2003
We designed a feedforward control law that greatly decreases the load sway of a shipboard crane due to ship rolling. This feedforward control uses measurements of ship rolling angle at each instant. At different operating points the optimal feedforward gain changes while is numerically computable.

Routes to genetic gain in potato

Nature Plants, 2018
Self-compatible diploid potatoes have been developed by knocking out the self-incompatibility gene S-RNase using CRISPR–Cas9 editing, opening new avenues for diploid potato breeding.

Systematic gain-of-function genetics in Drosophila

Development, 1998
ABSTRACT A modular misexpression system was used to carry out systematic gain-of-function genetic screens in Drosophila. The system is based on inducible expression of genes tagged by insertion of a P-element vector carrying a GAL4-regulated promoter oriented to transcribe flanking genomic sequences. To identify genes involved in eye and

Mechanisms and Genetics of Antipsychotic-Associated Weight Gain

Clinical Pharmacology & Therapeutics, 2011
Antipsychotic medications, which comprise one of the most widely prescribed medication classes, have proven effective in many psychiatric conditions. However, these agents can also be associated with obesity and other metabolic abnormalities, the mechanisms of which have been partially elucidated.

Enhancing genetic gain in the era of molecular breeding

Journal of Experimental Botany, 2017
As one of the important concepts in conventional quantitative genetics and breeding, genetic gain can be defined as the amount of increase in performance that is achieved annually through artificial selection. To develop pro ducts that meet the increasing demand of mankind, especially for food and feed, in addition to various industrial uses, breeders ...

Possibilities for genetic gain in salmonids

Aquaculture, 1975
Abstract A review of the literature concerning phenotypic and genetic parameters for economic production traits in salmonids show that very few estimates are available. However, based on the present knowledge the possibilities for genetic gain in, for example, growth rate are extremely good even if conservative estimates are considered.

Accelerating crop genetic gains with genomic selection

Theoretical and Applied Genetics, 2018
Genomic prediction based on additive genetic effects can accelerate genetic gain. There are opportunities for further improvement by including non-additive effects that access untapped sources of genetic diversity. Several studies have reported a worrying gap between the projected global future demand for plant-based products and the current annual ...
