Plant genetic resources represent both the basis for agricultural development and a reservoir of genetic adaptability that acts as a buffer against environmental change. The erosion of these resources threatens world food security. The need to conserve and utilize plant genetic resources as a safeguard against an unpredictable future is well recognized.
