Genetics of speciation in the basidiomycetous genus Polyporus

Theoretical and Applied Genetics, 1978
The wood rotting basidiomycete Polyporus (subgenus Leucopori Quel.) was chosen in order to investigate by genetic parameters the validity of the classical species concept based on typological characters.Species deliminations in this genus are derived from morphological characters and depend mainly on the size of hymenial pores.

Genetic speciation in the grasshopper Eyprepocnemis plorans

Chromosoma, 1965
1. Eyprepocnemis plorans meridionalis and E. p. ornatipes have a standard acridoid complement of 2n=22+XO acrocentric chromosomes in the male. Meiosis in them is normal and the former has a higher chiasma frequency (mean Xta per cell 13.95 v. 13.33). 2.

The genetic basis of evolution, adaptation and speciation

Molecular Ecology, 2011
A primary question in biology concerns the genetic basis of the evolution of novel traits, often in response to environmental changes, and how this can subsequently cause species isolation. This topic was the focus of the symposium on the Genetics of Speciation and Evolution at the annual meeting of the Canadian Society for Ecology and Evolution, held ...

Genetics and genomics of speciation

2019
The diversity of life on Earth is something that has long fascinated biologists. When we inspect all this variation, two striking patterns emerge. First, organisms appear as if they have almost been “designed” to live the way they do. However, as explained in chapters 4 and 5, the theory of natural selection accounts for this apparent design.

Speciation, genetic divergence and palaeogeography in the hormogastridae

Soil Biology and Biochemistry, 1992
Abstract The genus Hormogaster includes a few species of earthworms, whose disjunct areas of distribution are of great interest. Three of them— H. redii , H. pretiosa and H. samnitica —occur in the region of the old granitic shield of Western Europe, and their distribution seems related to some geological events which can be dated with ...

Speciation in parasites: a population genetics approach

Trends in Parasitology, 2005
Parasite speciation and host-parasite coevolution should be studied at both macroevolutionary and microevolutionary levels. Studies on a macroevolutionary scale provide an essential framework for understanding the origins of parasite lineages and the patterns of diversification.

Epigenetic Inheritance, Genetic Assimilation and Speciation

Journal of Theoretical Biology, 1999
Epigenetic inheritance systems enable the environmentally induced phenotypes to be transmitted between generations. Jablonka and Lamb (1991, 1995) proposed that these systems have a substantial role during speciation. They argued that divergence of isolated populations may be first triggered by the accumulation of (heritable) phenotypic differences ...

Genetic Variation and Speciation in New World Cichlids

Evolution, 1975
In both the New and Old World, endemism in freshwater fishes of the family Cichlidae presents novel problems in differentiation and speciation (Fryer and Iles, 1972; Trewavas et al., 1972; Greenwood, 1974). In the New World, at least three undescribed forms are endemic to the Cuatro Cienegas Basin, Coahuila, Mexico (Taylor and Minckley, 1966; Minckley,

Speciation genetics of biological invasions with hybridization

Molecular Ecology, 2010
The negative effects of human‐induced habitat disturbance and modification on multiple dimensions of biological diversity are well chronicled ( Turner 1996 ; Harding et al. 1998

Niche dimensionality and the genetics of ecological speciation.

Evolution; international journal of organic evolution, 2014
Niche dimensionality is suggested to be a key determinant of ecological speciation ("multifarious selection" hypothesis), but genetic aspects of this process have not been investigated theoretically. We use Fisher's geometrical model to study how niche dimensionality influences the mean fitness of hybrids formed upon secondary contact between ...
