Increasing Incidence of Facial Nerve Disorders in the United States from 2007 to 2022

open access: yesThe Laryngoscope, Volume 135, Issue 6, Page 2008-2013, June 2025.
In this study of national administrative claims data from 2007 to 2022, the mean annual incidence of facial nerve disorders was 30.5 cases per 100,000 adults. The mean annual incidence of Bell's palsy alone was found to be 24.5/100,000, with increasing annual incidence rates during the study period.

Resilience to audiogenic seizures is associated with p-ERK1/2 dephosphorylation in the subiculum of Fmr1 knockout mice

open access: yesFrontiers in Cellular Neuroscience, 2013
Young, but not adult, Fmr1 knockout (KO) mice display audiogenic seizures (AGS) that can be prevented by inhibiting extracellular signal-regulated kinases 1/2 (ERK1/2) phosphorylation. In order to identify the cerebral regions involved in these phenomena,

Evidence for an additive inhibitory component of contrast adaptation [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2012
The latency of visual responses generally decreases as contrast increases. Recording in the lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN), we find that response latency increases with increasing contrast in ON cells for some visual stimuli. We propose that this surprising latency trend can be explained if ON cells rest further from threshold at higher contrasts ...

Megacylops viridis Jurine, abyssal form in Lake Maggiore. [Translation of: Memorie dell'Istituto Italiano di Idrobiologia Dott.Marco de Marchi 17 57-79, 1964] [PDF]

open access: yes, 1964
Megacyclops viridis Jurine, noticed in Lago Maggiore in 1912 by De Marchi from the littoral vegetation of Pallanza, is a normal member of the littoral plankton of the lake.

Robust Estimation of Self-Exciting Generalized Linear Models with Application to Neuronal Modeling [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2015
We consider the problem of estimating self-exciting generalized linear models from limited binary observations, where the history of the process serves as the covariate. We analyze the performance of two classes of estimators, namely the $\ell_1$-regularized maximum likelihood and greedy estimators, for a canonical self-exciting process and ...

A theoretical framework for retinal computations: insights from textbook knowledge [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2018
Neural circuits in the retina divide the incoming visual scene into more than a dozen distinct representations that are sent on to central brain areas, such as the lateral geniculate nucleus and the superior colliculus. The retina can be viewed as a parallel image processor made of a multitude of small computational devices.

Involuntary Vocalisations and a Complex Hyperkinetic Movement Disorder Following Left Side Thalamic Haemorrhage

open access: yesBehavioural Neurology, 2003
A variety of involuntary speech phenomena as for example palilalia have been described as consequences of neurological disorders. Palilalia is the involuntary repetition of syllabels, words and phrases in ongoing speech.
