Protozoan Genomes: Karyotype Analysis, Chromosome Structure, and Chromosome Specific Libraries
2003Protozoa represent a diverse group of single-celled eukaryotes, many of which have parasitic life styles, infecting hundreds of millions of people. Unique aspects of their biology relate to their distinct evolutionary position and their complex life cycles, frequently involving different hosts.

Cysteine protease gene fragments from three protozoan parasites Trypanosoma cruzi, Trypanosoma brucei, and Entamoeba histolytica were amplified by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) from genomic DNA using degenerate oligonucleotide primers. The primers used for the amplification were designed based upon amino acid sequences flanking the active site ...

Analysis of the genomes of protozoan parasites using PFGE
1995Abstract Pulsed field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) has played a major role in developing our current knowledge of the genomes of a number of protozoan parasites as the genomes are small and the chromosomes usually fall within a usable size range. The studies on malaria and trypanosomatids described here demonstrate the applicability of the

Genomics and Genetic Manipulation of Protozoan Parasites Affecting Farm Animals
2017In this chapter we present a brief but state-of-the-art account of the genomics and current gene manipulation methods that can be used to improve our understanding of the genetics and the biology of an arbitrary group of 17 protozoan parasites responsible for diseases that affect animals worldwide, including babesiosis, toxoplasmosis, theileriosis ...

Many task computing for orthologous genes identification in protozoan genomes using Hydra
Concurrency and Computation: Practice and Experience, 2011SUMMARYOne of the main advantages of using a scientific workflow management system (SWfMS) is to orchestrate data flows among scientific activities and register provenance of the whole workflow execution. Nevertheless, the execution control of distributed activities in high performance computing environments by SWfMS presents challenges such as ...

Post genomic analysis of permeases from the amino acid/auxin family in protozoan parasites
Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications, 2004The "amino acid/auxin permeases" is probably the most represented family of transporters in the Trypanosoma cruzi genome. Using a high-throughput searching routine and preliminary data from the T. cruzi genome project, more than 15,000 sequences were iteratively assembled into contigs, and 60 open reading frames corresponding to different putative ...

Are Carbonic Anhydrases Suitable Targets to Fight Protozoan Parasitic Diseases?
Current Medicinal Chemistry, 2019Protozoans belonging to Plasmodium, Leishmania and Trypanosoma genera provoke widespread parasitic diseases with few treatment options and many of the clinically used drugs experiencing an extensive drug resistance phenomenon.

PROTOGIM: a novel tool to search motifs and domains in hypothetical proteins of protozoan genomes
Parasitology Research, 2005Whole sequencing of protozoan trypanosomatid genomes revealed the presence of several predicted unknown genes coding for hypothetical proteins. Pairwise, alignment-based, computational methods available online are unable to identify the function of these sequences.
