Invited review: Inbreeding in the genomics era: Inbreeding, inbreeding depression, and management of genomic variability [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Dairy Science, 2017
Traditionally, pedigree-based relationship coefficients have been used to manage the inbreeding and degree of inbreeding depression that exists within a population. The widespread incorporation of genomic information in dairy cattle genetic evaluations allows for the opportunity to develop and implement methods to manage populations at the genomic ...

Evaluation of inbreeding depression in Holstein cattle using whole-genome SNP markers and alternative measures of genomic inbreeding [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Dairy Science, 2013
The effects of increased pedigree inbreeding in dairy cattle populations have been well documented and result in a negative impact on profitability. Recent advances in genotyping technology have allowed researchers to move beyond pedigree analysis and study inbreeding at a molecular level.

Inbreeding in genome‐wide selection

Journal of Animal Breeding and Genetics, 2007
SummaryTraditional selection methods, such as sib and best linear unbiased prediction (BLUP) selection, which increased genetic gain by increasing accuracy of evaluation have also led to an increased rate of inbreeding per generation (ΔFG). This is not necessarily the case with genome‐wide selection, which also increases genetic gain by increasing ...

Genomic consequences of intensive inbreeding in an isolated wolf population [PDF]

open access: yesNature Ecology and Evolution, 2017
Inbreeding (mating between relatives) is a major concern for conservation as it decreases individual fitness and can increase the risk of population extinction. We used whole-genome resequencing of 97 grey wolves (Canis lupus) from the highly inbred Scandinavian wolf population to identify 'identical-by-descent' (IBD) chromosome segments as runs of ...

Inbreeding, Maternal Care and Genomic Imprinting

Journal of Theoretical Biology, 2003
Inactivation of expression of the paternal allele at two maternally silent imprinted loci has recently been reported to diminish the quality of care that female mice lavish on their offspring. This suggests that there can be disagreement between the maternally and paternally derived genomes of mothers over how much care for offspring is appropriate ...

Genomic signatures of inbreeding and mutation load in a threatened rattlesnake

Molecular Ecology, 2021
AbstractTheory predicts that threatened species living in small populations will experience high levels of inbreeding that will increase their genetic load, but recent work suggests that the impact of load may be minimized by purging resulting from long‐term population bottlenecks. Empirical studies that examine this idea using genome‐wide estimates of

Short communication: Methods to compute genomic inbreeding for ungenotyped individuals [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Dairy Science, 2020
The genomic measure of inbreeding is closer to the actual inbreeding than the pedigree-based measure. However, it cannot be computed for ungenotyped animals. An estimate of genomic inbreeding comes from the diagonal of matrix H used in single-step methods. This matrix projects genomic relationships to all ungenotyped members of the pedigree.

Genomic inbreeding and relationships among Holsteins, Jerseys, and Brown Swiss [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Dairy Science, 2011
Genomic measures of relationship and inbreeding within and across breeds were compared with pedigree measures using genotypes for 43,385 loci of 25,219 Holsteins, 3,068 Jerseys, and 872 Brown Swiss. Adjustment factors allow genomic and pedigree relationships to match more closely within breeds and in multibreed populations and were estimated using ...
