Linking community structure and climate vulnerability in desert plant assemblages of southern California

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Botany, EarlyView.
Abstract Premise Desert plant assemblages in southern California provide an opportunity to link patterns of community structure with climate‐driven vulnerability in a rapidly changing environment. California sustains an exceptionally diverse flora of approximately 4300 plant species, with 31% identified as endemic.

Guiding and Manipulating Light Fields in Microstructured Liquid Crystals

open access: yesAdvanced Physics Research, EarlyView.
This review summarizes recent advances in guided‐wave optics enabled by microstructured liquid crystal (LC) devices, covering their fundamental material properties, key degree of freedom for dynamic light field manipulations. The advances of linear guided‐wave optics, nonlinear‐optics with spatial optical solitons, and microlasers in LC‐based devices ...

Optimizing Strategies for Non‐Invasive Prospection of Settlements in the Intertidal Zone: A Case Study From the Centre of the Drowned Medieval Village of Tolsende (Scheldt Estuary, the Netherlands)

open access: yesArchaeological Prospection, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Medieval and early modern drowned villages in the intertidal zone of the Scheldt estuary (the Netherlands) constitute intriguing yet largely understudied components of north‐western Europe's underwater cultural heritage. Despite their high archaeological potential as time capsules of past settlement landscapes, research has remained limited ...

Scrutinizing the Wallacean shortfall: global gaps in snake occurrence data across space and environment

open access: yesEcography, EarlyView.
Occurrence records are fundamental for ecological and evolutionary research, providing key information on species' geographic ranges. However, these records are often taxonomically, spatially, and temporally biased, requiring caution in their use. Here, we analysed the spatial coverage of occurrence records for over 3500 snake species worldwide to ...

The proximal point algorithm with a general perturbation on geodesic spaces

open access: yesResults in Applied Mathematics
In this paper, we show some properties of a proximal mapping with a general perturbation for convex functions. We further investigate the existence and approximation of minimizers of a given convex function by using the proximal point algorithm with a ...

On global geodesic mappings of ellipsoids [PDF]

open access: yesAIP Conference Proceedings, 2012
In this paper we study geodesic deformations of ellipsoids of revolution. We present a one-parameter family of geodesic mappings that deform ellipsoids to surfaces of revolution, which are generally of a different type.

Cohomology fractals, Cannon–Thurston maps, and the geodesic flow

open access: yesExperimental Mathematics, 2022
Cohomology fractals are images naturally associated to cohomology classes in hyperbolic three-manifolds. We generate these images for cusped, incomplete, and closed hyperbolic three-manifolds in real-time by ray-tracing to a fixed visual radius. We discovered cohomology fractals while attempting to illustrate Cannon-Thurston maps without using vector ...

The 2025 Kamchatka Earthquake and Tsunami: Cascading Impacts and Risks to Japan

open access: yesEarthquake Engineering &Structural Dynamics, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT On July 29th, 2025, a large earthquake (Mw 8.8) occurred near the Kamchatka Peninsula. This event caused a tsunami that reached Japan's Pacific coast, even though the source was far away. In this study, we analyze the characteristics of earthquakes and tsunamis and discuss how they relate to the recurrence possibility and risk in Japan.
