Optimization of slender structures considering geometrical imperfections
Inverse Problems in Science and Engineering, 2006In this article, we present an optimization model which incorporates uncertainty induced by geometrical imperfections. Within the model, geometrical imperfections are represented by means of random fields. The induced uncertainties are then treated using the concept of a convex model.

Hyperbolic Cooling Towers with Geometric Imperfection
1986Geometric imperfection is probably one of the most common and important constructional errors, which occurs in the construction of large thin concrete shells, such as cooling towers.

IEEE Transactions on Robotics, 2010
Actuation redundancy increases and homogenizes the kinematic dexterity and stiffness as well as the force distribution among the actuators of parallel-kinematics machines (PKMs). It also allows for internal prestresses within the PKM without affecting the environment that can potentially be used to account for secondary tasks, such as active stiffness ...

Worst Geometric Imperfections of Rods and Shells
2018Various forms of geometric imperfections of compressed rods, which are subjected to loss of stability, have been considered in the normative literature. Similar investigations are also intensively carried out for the shells with imperfections, taking into account sub- and post-critical behavior of the systems, as well as an inelastic deformation of ...

Investigation of Geometric Imperfection in Inflatable Aerospace Structures
Journal of Aerospace Engineering, 2004Communication and solar array inflated structures must be deployed to a very precise geometric configuration in order to meet quality requirements of their application. The focus of this paper is on geometric imperfections associated with inflated structures.

Sensitivity of Crack Nucleation Parameters to the Geometric Imperfection
2008In this experimental study, we compared the plane stress crack growth in identical specimens with and without a geometric imperfection. The initial imperfection is intended to trigger a progressive process of single-site necking followed by single-site cracking in a predefined location and direction.

Sensitivity of Space Trusses to Member Geometric Imperfections
International Journal of Space Structures, 1995The existence of some geometrically imperfect members in a space truss is almost inevitable, and the fact that they produce initial internal member forces is undeniable. This paper is not about how to avoid member imperfections, but rather is a step forward towards better understanding of the implications of having imperfect members. The paper attempts

Lateral Dynamics of a Moving Web With Geometrical Imperfection
Journal of Dynamic Systems, Measurement, and Control, 2001In this paper, an analysis is provided for the steering of a long, warped web that is transported between two rollers. The web is modeled using the Timoshenko beam theory, which admits small amounts of elastic bending and transverse shearing. Closed-form solutions are obtained for three commonly encountered forms of in-plane imperfection: (1) a splice,
