Arithmetic of Period Maps of Geometric Origin

2012
This chapter considers some arithmetic aspects of period maps with a geometric origin. It focuses on the situation Φ‎ : S(ℂ) → Γ‎\D, where S parametrizes a family X → S of smooth, projective varieties defined over a number field k. The chapter recalls the notion of absolute Hodge classes (AH) and strongly absolute Hodge classes (SAH).

Geometric Modeling of Nano Structures with Periodic Surfaces

2006
Commonly used boundary-based solid and surface modeling methods in traditional computer aided design are not capable of constructing configurations with large numbers of particles or complex topology. In this paper, we propose a new geometric modeling scheme, periodic surface, for material design at atomic, molecular, and meso scales.

Some Greek Seals of the ‘Geometric’ Period

The Antiquaries Journal, 1927
That the art of gem- and seal-cutting persisted in Greece during the long and uncertain period of development that preceded the full flower of archaic Greek art has been acknowledged by the accepted classification of certain stones bearing intaglio designs as ‘geometric’. That such stones are not numerous in European collections is due chiefly to their

On Geometric Detection of Periodic Solutions and Chaos

1996
In this note we consider a differential equation (1) where f : ℝ × M → TM is a continuous time-dependent vector-field on a smooth manifold M. We assume that the Cauchy problem (2) associated to (1) has the uniqueness property. Fix some T > 0 and let the map f (·, x) be T-periodic for every x ∈ M. Examples of equations of that form

Quasi-Periodicity in Islamic Geometric Design

2014
For nearly 150 years, scholars have analyzed the symmetries of Islamic ornamental designs, constituting the most highly developed chapter in cultural symmetry studies. Yet these studies hardly exhaust the mathematically significant properties of Islamic designs.

A geometric variational problem on a periodic domain
