Basis function choice for trans-dimensional models in geophysical inference

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 2021
Inference methods depend on parametrization choices. Over-parametrized, under-parametrized, and trans-dimensional (trans-D) models are routinely chosen. Over-parametrization employs space discretization below the resolution power of the data and includes regularization (e.g. Tikhonov) to control the amount of model structure.

Ku-band scatterometer SST sensitivity and geophysical model function

2016 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium (IGARSS), 2016
Closely collocated C and Ku band scatterometer winds are investigated and significant differences occur depending on sea surface temperature (SST). C-band scatterometer winds do not show any significant SST effect against independent wind references, but Ku-band scatterometer winds show a clear SST-dependent effect, but varying as a function of wind ...

QuikSCAT geophysical model function for hurricane wind and rain

IGARSS 2001. Scanning the Present and Resolving the Future. Proceedings. IEEE 2001 International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium (Cat. No.01CH37217), 2002
The SeaWinds scatterometer on the QuikSCAT spacecraft has been operating since August 1999 to provide global mapping of ocean winds. The ocean surface winds from the QuikSCAT scatterometer have been shown to be accurate, except for precipitating and extreme high wind conditions.

QuikSCAT geophysical model function and winds for tropical cyclones

SPIE Proceedings, 2003
This paper presents the results from the analysis of QuiksCAT data from 1999-2000 hurricane seasons with improvements on the wind direction modeling of Ocean o6 for extreme high winds.

Passive remote sensing of oceanic whitecaps: Updated geophysical model function

2017 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium (IGARSS), 2017
Satellite-based estimates of whitecap fraction W provide consistent global, long-term data useful to quantify air-sea processes. Our first algorithm providing satellite-based W data uses passive microwave observations from WindSat at low spatial resolution, early version of the WindSat geophysical model function (GMF) for surface emissivity and the ...

A revised geophysical model function for the advanced scatterometer (ASCAT) at NOAA/NESDIS

2010 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium, 2010
The current ASCAT winds retrieval is based on the CMOD5.n geophysical model function (GMF) with the ASCAT wind data processor developed at the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI). Recent validation of ASCAT wind retrieval reveals that high wind retrievals were underestimated as being compared to the operational QuikSCAT scatterometer. The

A SST-Dependent Geophysical Model Function for HY-2A Microwave Scatterometer

IGARSS 2019 - 2019 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium, 2019
Satellite scatterometer provides an effective approach to obtaining the ocean surface winds on a global scale. However, none of the geophysical model functions(GMF) currently used in wind retrieval takes the effect of sea surface temperature(SST) into account.

QuikSCAT geophysical model function for tropical cyclones and application to Hurricane Floyd

IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing, 2001
The QuikSCAT radar measurements of several tropical cyclones in 1999 have been studied to develop the geophysical model function (GMF) of Ku-band radar /spl sigma//sub 0/ values (normalized radar cross section) for extreme high wind conditions. To account for the effects of precipitation, the authors analyze the co-located rain rates from the Special ...

An L-Band Ocean Geophysical Model Function Derived From PALSAR

IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing, 2009
This paper examines L-band normalized radar cross section (NRCS) dependence on ocean surface wind. More than 90 000 match-ups, each consisting of the L-band HH NRCS, incidence angles, wind speeds, and wind directions, were collected from the Phased-Array L-Band Synthetic Aperture Radar (PALSAR) and scatterometer wind vectors.

QuikSCAT geophysical model function and imaging of tropical cyclone winds

IGARSS 2000. IEEE 2000 International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium. Taking the Pulse of the Planet: The Role of Remote Sensing in Managing the Environment. Proceedings (Cat. No.00CH37120), 2002
The feasibility of spaceborne scatterometers for the measurements of tropical cyclone wind fields has been investigated with the data from the SeaWinds scatterometer on QuikSCAT. The authors have examined about fifty revs of Quikscat data from seven hurricanes with collocated SSM/I rain rate.
