An improved NASA Scatterometer geophysical model function for tropical cyclones
IGARSS '98. Sensing and Managing the Environment. 1998 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing. Symposium Proceedings. (Cat. No.98CH36174), 1998The NASA Scatterometer (NSCAT) has been used to infer ocean surface wind vectors in tropical cyclones, but these measurements have generally under-estimated the high winds. This research provides an improved relationship, between the radar backscatter and the ocean surface wind vector, known as the geophysical model function (GMF).

Geophysical model functions for the sea state bias in satellite altimetry
Proceedings of IGARSS '93 - IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium, 2002The sea state bias in altimeter measurements of sea surface height have been investigated by many authors, resulting in several proposed algorithms of the form SSB=/spl epsi/H where H is the significant wave height (SWH) and /spl epsi/ is a non-dimensional function of wind and wave parameters. All known algorithms are presently rated. The most popular,

Validation of the NSCAT-5 Geophysical Model Function for Scatsat-1 Wind Scatterometer
IGARSS 2018 - 2018 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium, 2018Recent developments on the wind geophysical model function (GMF) of Ku-band scatterometers include a sea surface temperature (SST) dependent term. It has been found that the SST effects on the radar backscatter are wind speed dependent and more pronounced in vertical polarization (VV) than in horizontal polarisation (HH) at higher incidence angles, and

Study of geophysical model functions for inverse problem of sea surface scattering
2017 11th European Conference on Antennas and Propagation (EUCAP), 2017In addition to image processing and neural network, inverting the Geophysical Model Functions (GMFs) is one of the most widely used ways to retrieve oceanic parameters, i.e. surface wind speed, temperature, salinity, etc., from Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data. More exact the description of the GMFs is, more accurately the results are obtained.

Despite based on different approaches and objectives, it is reasonable to compare near-surface wind speed estimated by the empirical (EP) and electromagnetic (EP) geophysical model function (GMF), since both of them describe the relation between radar scattering and wind vector (directly for EP GMF and via surface roughness spectrum for EM GMF).

New Geophysical Model Function for Ocean Emissivity at 89 GHz Over Arctic Waters
IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Letters, 2019New empirical geophysical model functions (GMFs) have been developed to interpret 89-GHz brightness temperature measurements over cold Arctic seas. Careful data screening is applied to the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer 2 (AMSR2) multifrequency measurements to exclude atmospheric scattering and large absorption impacts, to estimate the 89-GHz ...
