Microspherules formed by lightning strikes

open access: yesMeteoritics &Planetary Science, Volume 61, Issue 5, Page 743-767, May 2026.
Abstract Natural microspherules are formed by high‐temperature processes and are present throughout the geologic record to the present day. We report the discovery of large numbers of microspherules recovered from a rock pavement in the Pilbara region, Western Australia.

Gamma Emission from Large Galactic Structures

open access: yes, 2017
Gamma-ray emission from large structures is useful for tracing the propagation and distribution of cosmic rays throughout our Galaxy. For example, the search for gamma-ray emission from Giant Molecular Clouds may allow us to probe the flux of cosmic rays

CI chondrite Oued Chebeika 002 links asteroids Bennu and Ryugu to common parent body

open access: yesMeteoritics &Planetary Science, Volume 61, Issue 5, Page 801-818, May 2026.
Abstract CI chondrites are a compositionally primitive group of meteorites that have undergone extensive aqueous alteration, providing insights into the evolution of primitive planetesimals. Oued Chebeika 002 is the most pristine CI chondrite to date.

Multi-scale harmonic model for solar and climate cyclical variation throughout the Holocene based on Jupiter-Saturn tidal frequencies plus the 11-year solar dynamo cycle

open access: yes, 2012
The sunspot record since 1749 is made of three major cycles (9.98, 10.9 and 11.86 yr). The side frequencies are related to the spring tidal period of Jupiter and Saturn (9.93 yr) and to the tidal sidereal period of Jupiter (11.86 yr).

Ryugu reference project: Recommendations from the measurement definition team

open access: yesMeteoritics &Planetary Science, Volume 61, Issue 5, Page 819-848, May 2026.
Abstract Sample return missions play a significant role in planetary science by providing pristine extraterrestrial materials. JAXA's Hayabusa2 and NASA's OSIRIS‐REx missions have returned samples from the C‐type asteroids Ryugu and Bennu, respectively. The chemical and mineralogical compositions of these samples closely resemble those of CI chondrites,

Double layers in the downward current region of the aurora [PDF]

open access: yesNonlinear Processes in Geophysics, 2003
Direct observations of magnetic-field-aligned (parallel) electric fields in the downward current region of the aurora provide decisive evidence of naturally occurring double layers.

Cosmology and Science Education: Problems and Promises

open access: yes, 2012
Cosmology differs in some respects significantly from other sciences, primarily because of its intimate association with issues of a conceptual and philosophical nature.

Mountain‐top spherules: Criteria to identify natural and synthetic particles

open access: yesMeteoritics &Planetary Science, Volume 61, Issue 5, Page 898-913, May 2026.
Abstract Natural microspherules are important tracers of geologic and environmental processes in modern and ancient deposits. However, anthropogenic contamination can dilute natural collections by releasing synthetic microspherules into the environment.

Can the International Reference Ionosphere Model Predict Long‐Term Trends in the Ionosphere?

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 8, 28 April 2026.
Abstract The International Reference Ionosphere (IRI) model can partially reproduce ionospheric long‐term trends (LTTs), although not intentionally, provided that an appropriate effective ionospheric index is used. We evaluate how model predictions driven by a solar activity proxy (R12) and by an effective ionospheric proxy (IG12) can reproduce the ...
