Influences of cosmic radiation, artificial radioactivity and aerosol concentration upon the fair-weather atmospheric electric field in Lisbon (1955–1991) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
The atmospheric electric field is influenced by cosmic radiation, radioactivity and aerosols. In this work we investigate the existence of: (i) correlations between relative anomalies of annual values of atmospheric electric field and cosmic radiation ...

The vertical and spatial structure of ENSO in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere from GPS radio occultation measurements

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2012
The vertical and spatial structure of the atmospheric El Niño‐Southern Oscillation (ENSO) signal is investigated using radio occultation (RO) data from August 2006 to December 2010.

On the approximation of spatial structures of global tidal magnetic field models [PDF]

open access: yesAnnales Geophysicae, 2018
The extraction of the magnetic signal induced by the oceanic M2 tide is typically based solely on the temporal periodicity of the signal. Here, we propose a system of tailored trial functions that additionally takes the spatial constraint into account

A Closer Earth and the Faint Young Sun Paradox: Modification of the Laws of Gravitation, or Sun/Earth Mass Losses? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Given a solar luminosity L_Ar = 0.75 L_0 at the beginning of the Archean 3.8 Gyr ago, where L_0 is the present-day one, if the heliocentric distance r of the Earth was r_Ar = 0.956 r_0, the solar irradiance would have been as large as I_Ar = 0.82 I_0. It

The variability of Joule heating, and its effects on the ionosphere and thermosphere [PDF]

open access: yesAnnales Geophysicae, 2001
A considerable fraction of the solar wind energy that crosses the magnetopause ends up in the high-latitude thermosphere-ionosphere system as a result of Joule heating, the consequences of which are very significant and global in nature.

A new method to identify flux ropes in space plasmas [PDF]

open access: yesAnnales Geophysicae, 2018
Flux ropes are frequently observed in the space plasmas, such as solar wind, planetary magnetosphere and magnetosheath etc., and play an important role in the reconnection process and mass and flux transportation.

In situ evidence for the structure of the magnetic null in a 3D reconnection event in the Earth's magnetotail [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
Magnetic reconnection is one of the most important processes in astrophysical, space and laboratory plasmas. Identifying the structure around the point at which the magnetic field lines break and subsequently reform, known as the magnetic null point, is ...

Direct measurement of bidirectional turbulent fluxes of atmospheric cluster ions

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
First direct eddy covariance measurements of vertical turbulent fluxes of atmospheric cluster ions are presented. The net turbulent flux was mostly positive for negative cluster ions (net emission of negative ions) and mostly negative for positive cluster ions (net deposition of positive ions).
