Evaluating the possible role of bottom currents and internal waves in shaping seafloor morphology in a mesophotic reef

open access: yesSedimentology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Mesophotic reefs are located in low light conditions which, depending on the region, are usually found in water depths greater than ~30 m. They are less affected by ocean warming than reefs found in shallower water depths and thus might become increasingly important for the sustainability of marine biodiversity.

The sensitivity of rapidly rotating Rayleigh--B\'enard convection to Ekman pumping

open access: yes, 2017
The dependence of the heat transfer, as measured by the nondimensional Nusselt number $Nu$, on Ekman pumping for rapidly rotating Rayleigh-B\'enard convection in an infinite plane layer is examined for fluids with Prandtl number $Pr = 1$.

Hierarchical Testing of a Hybrid Machine Learning‐Physics Global Atmosphere Model

open access: yesAGU Advances, Volume 7, Issue 2, April 2026.
Abstract Machine learning (ML)‐based models have demonstrated high skill and computational efficiency, often outperforming conventional physics‐based models in weather and subseasonal predictions. While prior studies have assessed their fidelity in capturing synoptic‐scale atmospheric dynamics, their performance across timescales and under out‐of ...

Surface Vector Current Retrieval by Single-Station High-Frequency Surface Wave Radar Based on Ocean Dynamics in the Taiwan Strait

open access: yesRemote Sensing
In order to address the issue of limited common coverage and high cost in mapping ocean surface vector current by two (or more) high-frequency surface wave radars, this paper proposes a single-station surface wave radar vector current inversion algorithm.

Observational Analysis of the Formation Reasons and Evolution Law of Winter Counter-Wind Current in Jiazi Sea Area of Northeastern South China Sea

open access: yesJournal of Marine Science and Engineering, 2022
Based on the observational data of wind, current, and sea surface temperature in the Jiazi sea area of the northeastern South China Sea in 2018 and the satellite remote sensing data of sea surface temperature in the northern South China Sea, this paper ...

Application of Variational Autoencoder‐Based Clustering for Geophysical Fluid Circulations With Small Sample Size

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Machine Learning and Computation, Volume 3, Issue 2, April 2026.
Abstract The variational autoencoder (VAE), a deep generative model, can extract a good feature representation for clustering from complex data; however, the use of this algorithm in the geophysical fluid circulation has been limited. The sample size for a geophysical phenomenon is generally small because of a large dimensional size, especially for ...

Internal Lee Waves Control Deep Ocean Turbulent Mixing in the Antarctic Circumpolar Current at 50°E

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 6, 28 March 2026.
Abstract Full‐depth (Surface‐to‐bottom) turbulent kinetic energy dissipation (TKED) observed with fast‐response thermistors across the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) at 50° $\mathit{{}^{\circ}}$E is compared with the energy flux of bottom‐generated internal waves estimated with high‐resolution multibeam bathymetry.

Assimilation of Earth rotation parameters into a global ocean model: excitation of polar motion [PDF]

open access: yesNonlinear Processes in Geophysics, 2011
The oceanic contribution to Earth rotation anomalies can be manifold. Possible causes are a change of total ocean mass, changes in current speed or location and changes in mass distribution.
