Distinct Dominant Intraseasonal Oscillation Modes Modulate South China's Persistent Extreme Precipitation in Rainy Season

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 6, 28 March 2026.
Abstract This study investigates mechanisms by which distinct intraseasonal oscillation modes drive regional persistent extreme precipitation events over South China during the rainy season. Based on periodic characteristics of 54 such events, two dominant modes are identified: 12–20‐day (type‐1) and 25–50‐day (type‐2) oscillations. Although comparable

Topographic generation of submesoscale centrifugal instability and energy dissipation

open access: yesNature Communications, 2016
Most of the ocean kinetic energy is contained in the large scale geostrophic currents and the pathways of energy toward dissipation are still in question.

Estimating ocean currents from the joint reconstruction of absolute dynamic topography and sea surface temperature through deep learning algorithms [PDF]

open access: yesOcean Science
Our study focuses on absolute dynamic topography (ADT) and sea surface temperature (SST) mapping from satellite observations, with the primary objective of improving the satellite-derived ADT (and derived geostrophic currents) spatial resolution ...

Assessing Subseasonal Predictions of Stratosphere‐Troposphere Coupling of GraphCast

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, Volume 131, Issue 6, 28 March 2026.
Abstract The rapid development of artificial intelligence weather forecasting models (AIWFMs) has revolutionized weather prediction. GraphCast, a leading AIWFM, outperforms state‐of‐the‐art physics‐based numerical models at the surface and in the lower troposphere.

On the global estimates of geostrophic and Ekman surface currents [PDF]

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography: Fluids and Environments, 2013
Lay AbstractA fundamental goal of physical oceanography is to provide a primary description of global ocean circulation. Historically, ocean surface currents were inferred from ship drift measurements, mainly in relation with navigational requirements. Ocean circulation was shown to play an important role in the last decades for studying the transport ...

Prolonged Low‐Salinity in the Eastern Arabian Sea Associated With the 2020–2023 Triple‐Dip La Niña

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 5, 16 March 2026.
Abstract Prolonged low salinity was observed in the eastern Arabian Sea (EAS) from autumn 2020 to autumn 2023, closely associated with the 2020–2023 triple‐dip La Niña. Oceanic planetary wave bridge was a key driver of the extremely low salinity during winter, whereas freshwater flux remained an important contributor in other seasons.

The Propagation of Internal Waves in a Geostrophic Current

open access: yesJournal of Physical Oceanography, 1981
Abstract The paper presents the WKB theory of internal wave propagation in a large-scale geostrophic mean flow with vertical as well as horizontal shear. As an application a mean flow with isopycnals having constant slope but arbitrary spacing is considered and the behavior of waves at turning points and critical layers is discussed.

Overturning Circulation of the North Atlantic Subtropical Gyre Computed in Density Coordinates at 26°N

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 5, 16 March 2026.
Abstract The RAPID‐MOCHA‐WBTS array in the subtropical gyre of the North Atlantic has measured the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) and the overturning streamfunction in depth coordinates since 2004. Here we show that the overturning streamfunction in density coordinates can be estimated by combining data from the RAPID‐MOCHA‐WBTS ...

Surface currents in the Mid-Atlantic Bight: the role of the Gulf Stream versus wind

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science
Surface currents of the Mid-Atlantic Bight (MAB) were studied using high-frequency radar (HFR) observations at 6 km resolution during a 5-year period (2020–2024). The study’s focus on the role of the Gulf Stream (GS) contrasts with most past studies that
