Scaled geotechnical centrifuge modelling of gelifluction [PDF]

open access: yes
This thesis describes the laboratory modelling of gelifluction processes using the geotechnical centrifuge technique. Thirteen 1/10 scale planar slope models were frozen from the surface downwards on the laboratory floor and thawed, also from the surface downwards, under gravitational acceleration of 10 gravities (approximately 98.1 ms'2).

Exploring Potential Mechanisms for the Initiation of Solifluction Patterns

open access: yesAGU Advances, Volume 7, Issue 3, June 2026.
Abstract Hillslopes in arctic regions commonly display large‐scale features—known as solifluction patterns—that form due to the exceedingly slow downhill movement of frost‐heaved soil. Here we use a combination of remote sensing data, linear stability analysis, numerical modeling, and review of a wide range of literature to evaluate several working ...

Application of Neural Networks for Moon Near‐Surface Velocity‐Model Extraction

open access: yesGeophysical Prospecting, Volume 74, Issue 5, June 2026.
ABSTRACT Characterizing the shallow lunar subsurface is essential for future exploration activities, including landing‐site assessment, infrastructure construction and subsurface resource investigation. However, conventional seismic approaches for near‐surface characterization commonly depend on prior velocity information and assumptions regarding the ...

Microbially induced sedimentary structures in fluvial settings: the gas domes from the Bolzano Megacaldera (Permian, Italy)

open access: yesSedimentology, Volume 73, Issue 4, Page 914-944, June 2026.
ABSTRACT Gas domes serve as some of the earliest and most persisting indicators of life on Earth, yet their documentation in continental environments remains sparse. This study aims to bridge this gap by examining gas domes within the Permian fluvial succession of Monte Luco, located in the caldera of the Bolzano Supervolcano. These structures occur as

Land Subsidence Susceptibility Mapping in Semi‐Arid Regions Using PS‐InSAR and Tree‐Based Ensemble Machine Learning: A Case Study From Çumra, Türkiye

open access: yesTransactions in GIS, Volume 30, Issue 4, June 2026.
ABSTRACT Land subsidence is an increasing environmental hazard in semi‐arid agricultural basins where intensive groundwater abstraction, compressible geological units, and expanding land‐use pressures interact. This study presents a PS‐InSAR and machine‐learning‐based framework for land subsidence susceptibility mapping in the Çumra District of the ...

Soil Crack Width Controls Preferential Flow Velocity Through Drag Partitioning

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 10, 28 May 2026.
Abstract Preferential flow within soil cracks influences land surface hydrological processes, yet direct quantifying preferential flow velocity (PFV) remains challenging. Here, we develop a method for high‐resolution monitoring and quantifying PFV in soil cracks using optical frequency domain reflectometry (OFDR).
