Gas Type of the Paperhydrate Estimate in an Area of Deformation and High Heat Flow at the Chile Triple Junction

open access: yesGeosciences, 2019
Large amounts of gas hydrate are present in marine sediments offshore Taitao Peninsula, near the Chile Triple Junction. Here, marine sediments on the forearc contain carbon that is converted to methane in a regime of very high heat flow and intense rock ...

Modeling and monitoring injectivity evolution during cold CO2 injection with field evidence from aquistore carbon capture and storage operations

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
This work integrates 5 years of field data from the Aquistore CCS project with a non‐isothermal THM modeling framework to explain how cold CO2 injection alters injectivity over time. The study shows that sustained cooling near the wellbore reduces effective stresses, promotes tensile micro‑cracking, and leads to semi‑reversible permeability enhancement

Reusing depleted oil and gas wells for geothermal energy: Feasibility, challenges, and a decision‐making framework for sustainable conversion

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
The graphical abstract presents a structured decision‐support framework for assessing the feasibility of converting depleted oil and gas wells into geothermal energy systems. The left panel illustrates a comprehensive, multi‐stage decision‐making framework progressing from prefeasibility screening and technical–economic analysis to policy alignment ...

Nanoscale fracture mechanisms in defective α‐quartz induced by compression: Insights from molecular dynamics simulation

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
Rock fracture can ultimately be traced to atomic bond breakage. Taking quartz as a representative mineral, this paper employs molecular dynamics to identify the crack initiation and propagation mechanisms for single‐hole cases, as well as crack coalescence modes between double holes under compression, providing a physical basis for multiscale modeling ...
