An innovative stimulation technology for permeability enhancement in enhanced geothermal system - Fully coupled thermo-poroelastic numerical approach

open access: yes, 2012
This paper presents a new technique for stimulation of enhanced geothermal systems utilising roughness induced opening of fractures in the presence of compressive and shear stresses as well as fluid pressure inside the fracture.

Thermal‐induced fracture evolution and acoustic signature of Beishan granite: Insights into tensile strength of barrier system for high‐level radioactive waste disposal

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
The tensile strength of granite, a proposed host for nuclear waste, degrades severely above 400°C. We link this to specific microcracking patterns captured by acoustic emission, establishing a scientific basis for assessing repository safety under thermal load.

Ground-source heat pumps and underground thermal energy storage: energy for the future [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
We need energy for space heating—but in most cases not where or when energy sources are available. Energy storage, which helps match energy supply and demand, has been practised for centuries, also in Norway.

Carbon emission assessment of tunnel infrastructures: From construction to operation

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
This study develops a lifecycle carbon accounting framework for tunnel infrastructures, covering design, construction, operation, maintenance, and dismantling. Applied to a subsea tunnel case, the framework reveals the carbon emission distribution among four typical tunnel types and highlights potential carbon offset methods for low‐carbon tunnel ...
