Unraveling Occurrence Patterns and Diversity of Avian Malaria Parasites in Iberian Obligate and Facultative Scavenger Birds

open access: yesIntegrative Zoology, EarlyView.
Low overall haemosporidian occurrence (3.4%; 13/383). Unexpected high lineage diversity (10 new host–parasite interactions). Novel Leucocytozoon lineage (GYPBAR01) in all European vultures except the griffon vulture. Plasmodium relictum (lineage SGS1) in adult red kites.

Historical anthropogenic stressors affect bird ecology and feather development in neotropical forests

open access: yesOikos, Volume 2025, Issue 10, October 2025.
Fragmentation and habitat loss driven by agricultural expansion have significantly affected bird ecology. Additionally, the growing use of agrochemicals impacts ecosystems and avian communities. Tools such as isotopic analysis provide reliable proxies for assessing organisms' habitat use and diet, and can also reflect environmental alterations, such as

Understorey bird responses to the abandonment of artisanal gold mining in Guyana

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 62, Issue 10, Page 2774-2786, October 2025.
Whilst many forest‐dependent birds will avoid the exposed mine centre, diversity at the immediate edge has the potential to recover, particularly in smaller and older mines. As we have found that natural vegetation recovery occurs at the mine edges and not within the centre, targeted restoration efforts might focus on mine edges to enhance recovery ...

Frugivory on Margaritaria nobilis L.f. (Euphorbiaceae): poor investment and mimetism [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Dehiscent fruits of Euphorbiaceae usually have two stages of seed dispersal, autochory followed by myrmecochory. Two stages of Margaritaria nobilis seed dispersal were described, the first stage autochoric followed by ornithocoric. Their dehiscent fruits

Vertebrate diversity and biomass along a recovery gradient in a lowland tropical forest

open access: yesBiotropica, Volume 57, Issue 1, January 2025.
Deforestation of tropical forests has resulted in large areas of secondary forests with the potential for biodiversity to re‐establish to levels usually found in old‐growth forests. This study shows that diversity and biomass of mammals and birds in regenerating forests can recover to old‐growth levels within a relatively short time.

Habituation of wildlife to ecotourism: A COVID‐19 lockdown experiment in Corcovado National Park, Costa Rica 野生动物对生态旅游的习惯化:哥斯达黎加科尔科瓦多国家公园中的COVID‐19封锁实验

open access: yesWildlife Letters, Volume 2, Issue 1, Page 5-16, March 2024.
Corcovado National Park in Costa Rica is an important ecotourism site. During the COVID‐19 lockdown, we studied the impact of human visitation on wildlife using camera traps on walking trails, comparing closed (control) and open (experimental) trails, pre‐ and post‐lockdown. We assessed activity patterns and photo rates of 13 species. Wildlife behavior
