SummaryPet gerbils were identified as the cause of asthma or rhinitis in three out‐patients seen over a period of eighteen months. Allergy to gerbils was confirmed by skin tests, RAST and the clinical course. Gerbils are popular household pets and allergy to gerbils may be commoner than recognized.

Chloroform hepatotoxicity in the Mongolian gerbil*1 [PDF]
CHCl3 hepatotoxicity was studied in the male Mongolian gerbil and compared to that in the male Sprague-Dawley strain rat. Based on elevations in serum transaminase activities in response to CHCl3 exposure, control gerbils were more sensitive to CHCl3 than were gerbils treated with phenobarbital, chlordecone, mirex, or 3-methylcholanthrene.

Gerbils from Iraq, with Description of a New Gerbil [PDF]
A number of gerbils and sand rats belonging to the Sub-family Gerbillinae were obtained by the author in Iraq during the period from August, 1953, until March, 1955. The species obtained are listed below with some notes on their characteristics and field habits.

Preweanling and postweaning offspring of gerbil parents fed Purina Laboratory Chow or Pooch dog food show selective preference for odors coming from other animals of these same diets. Odors with differential quality include whole animal, cage material and ventral scent gland sebum.

Learned helplessness in the gerbil?
Journal of Comparative Psychology, 1983Evidence of learned helplessness was demonstrated in Mongolian gerbils. Two consecutive days of jump-up escape were followed 24 hr later by testing in a bar-press escape task. Reliable differences occurred between escapable and inescapable animals and between inescapable and control animals.

Household pets are well known to cause allergic symptoms in susceptible individuals, most commonly conjunctivitis, rhinitis, bronchospasm or urticaria. The increasing prevalence of exotic pets, including rodents, may introduce novel allergens into the household setting.

Gerbil model of acute neosporosis
Veterinary Parasitology, 2005Experimental infections with the NC-1 strain of Neospora caninum were conducted in gerbils (Meriones unguiculatus) to determine their acute responses to experimental intraperitoneal infection. Five groups of five female gerbils were used and they were intraperitoneally infected with 1x10(6), 2x10(6), 3x10(6), 4x10(6) or 5x10(6) tachyzoites.

Despite the wealth of small mammals in the Late Neogene of Yushe Basin, gerbils are not an abundant or diverse element. A single genus, Pseudomeriones Schaub, 1934, is known in the Miocene-Pliocene deposits of Yushe, although the Pleistocene introduces a new fauna containing Meriones Illiger, 1811.

The early development of the EEG in the gerbil
Behavioral Biology, 1975The present study investigated the development of the electroencephalograph in the awake gerbil (Meriones unguiculatus). Sixteen gerbils, from five different litters, were used. Electroencephalographs were recorded on each subject, from birth to 30 days of age, using a bipolar scalp electrode arrangement.
