Anatolian ground squirrel (Spermophilus xanthoprymnus) retina: Comparative expression of synaptophysin, NeuN, calbindin‐D28k, parvalbumin, glial fibrillary acidic protein, and Iba‐1 during pre‐hibernation and hibernation

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract Hibernation induces significant molecular and cellular adaptations in the retina to maintain function under reduced metabolic conditions. This study aimed to investigate the expression of neuronal, synaptic, and glial markers in the retina of Spermophilus xanthoprymnus during pre‐hibernation and hibernation periods using immunohistochemical ...

The Organization of Somatostatin-Immunoreactive Cells in the Visual Cortex of the Gerbil

open access: yesBiomedicines, 2022
Somatostatin (SST) is widely expressed in the brain and plays various, vital roles involved in neuromodulation. The purpose of this study is to characterize the organization of SST neurons in the Mongolian gerbil visual cortex (VC) using ...

A natural barrier: tick‐repellent potential of a spruce‐derived volatile blend against Hyalomma excavatum and Ixodes ricinus

open access: yesPest Management Science, EarlyView.
Both active and passive questing ticks, Hyalomma excavatum and Ixodes ricinus, were assessed for behavioural responses to two novel plant‐derived repellent volatile organic compound blends. Both tick species were repelled by the products, and both novo blends were significantly more repellent than currently available commercial products.

Impaired Auditory Temporal Selectivity in the Inferior Colliculus of Aged Mongolian Gerbils [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Aged humans show severe difficulties in temporal auditory processing tasks (e.g., speech recognition in noise, low-frequency sound localization, gap detection). A degradation of auditory function with age is also evident in experimental animals.

Compromised nutrition in gerbils infected by Cystoisospora felis detected through an animal performance analysis tool Comprometimento nutricional em gerbis infectados por Cystoisospora felis detectado através de uma ferramenta de análise de desempenho animal

open access: yesRevista Brasileira de Parasitologia Veterinária, 2011
The impact of Cystoisospora felis infection on the nutritional efficiency of gerbils was studied. The variables weight gain and feed intake were measured during four weeks in 28 laboratory gerbils, of which 14 were inoculated with 3.5 × 10(5) sporulated ...
