Prediction equation for the mini-mental state examination: influence of education, age, and sex

open access: yesFisioterapia e Pesquisa, 2019
The mini-mental state examination (MMSE) is a screening test used worldwide for identifying changes in the scope of cognition. Studies have shown the influence of education, age and sex in the MMSE score. However, in Brazil, the studies consider only one

Emergency Department Pain Management Following Implementation of a Geriatric Hip Fracture Program [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Introduction: Over 300,000 patients in the United States sustain low-trauma fragility hip fractures annually. Multidisciplinary geriatric fracture programs (GFP) including early, multimodal pain management reduce morbidity and mortality. Our overall goal

FASLG Derived from Fibroblasts in Hydroxyapatite‐Rich Microenvironment Induces Urothelial Anoikis to Trigger Randall's Plaque Exposure

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Randall's plaques (RP) serve as the nidus for calcium oxalate (CaOx) kidney stones. The current study reveals that hydroxyapatite (HAP) crystals activate the THY1–GSK3α/β–β‐catenin axis in renal interstitial fibroblasts (hRIFs), inducing FASLG secretion.

Incidence and risk factors of Vancomycin-induced thrombocytopenia: a six-year real-world study

open access: yesBMC Infectious Diseases
Objectives Drug-induced thrombocytopenia has been reported for numerous drugs. Vancomycin-induced thrombocytopenia (VIT) is infrequently and often under-recognized. VIT can lead to the serious consequences of some life-threatening bleeding, especially in

Older adults and withdrawal from benzodiazepine hypnotics in general practice: effects on cognitive function, sleep, mood and quality of life [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
Background: Older adults are the main recipients of repeat prescriptions for benzodiazepine (BZD) hypnotics. BZDs can impair cognitive function and may not aid sleep when taken continuously for years.

Highly Biomimetic Ectodermal Epithelial Organoids for Epithelial Barrier Stimulation Assays

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Evaluating the potential toxicity of pharmaceuticals and biomaterials to ectodermal epithelia, such as the oral mucosa and skin, is indispensable in pre‐clinical assessments. However, this remains a challenge primarily owing to the lack of physiologically relevant and accurate screening models.

NIR‐II Imaging‐Guided Photothermal Activation of a TRPV4‐Targeted Nanoplatform Delivering Cycloastragenol to Promote Microglia Reprogramming and α‐Synuclein Clearance in Parkinson's Disease

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Current therapies for Parkinson's disease (PD) fail to concurrently address α‐synuclein (α‐syn) aggregation and microglia‐mediated neuroinflammation. Herein, we engineer a near‐infrared‐II (NIR‐II) phototheranostic nanoplatform, CAG/FD1080@MM‐aTRPV4, for synergistic regulation of microglial function and real‐time monitoring of PD pathology. We

Microglia‐Targeted Biomimetic Tetrahedral Framework Nucleic Acid Nanovesicles for Synergistic Treatment of Sepsis‐Associated Encephalopathy

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Sepsis‐associated encephalopathy (SAE) lacks effective therapies. We developed ME@FDsi, a biomimetic nanodrug using a tetrahedral framework nucleic acid to deliver disulfiram and siTNFα. It crosses the blood‐brain barrier, targets M1 microglia, inhibits pyroptosis and inflammation, and scavenges ROS.
