Testicular cancer is rare, accounting for 1% to 2% of all male malignancies. Nearly 90% to 95% of tumors arising in testis are germ cell in origin. Other sites of malignant germ cell tumors include the retroperitoneum, mediastinum, sacrococcygeal region, and pineal gland. The highest incidence is seen in Scandinavian countries, particularly Denmark (1).

AbstractIntracranial germ cell tumors are rare tumors occurring in adolescents and young adults, which include germinomas and non-germinomatous type germ cell tumors (NGGCT). In the past few decades, cooperative trial groups in Europe and North America have developed successful strategies to improve survival outcomes and decrease treatment-related ...

The development of modern surgical staging and effective chemotherapy regimens has markedly improved outcome of treatment of ovarian germ cell tumors. Germ-Cell Tumors of the Mediastinum
Advances in Anatomic Pathology, 1998Germ-cell tumors occurring primarily in the mediastinum have been well recognized in the literature for many years. Unfortunately, most of what has been written on these tumors has been in the form of case reports and small series of cases, thus precluding a better understanding of their clinical and demographic features, as well as of their biologic ...

Chemotherapy for Germ Cell Tumors
Urologic Clinics of North America, 1987With the advent of cisplatin-based chemotherapy and the incorporation of adjunctive surgery, 70 to 80 per cent of patients with advanced germ cell tumors are cured. Serum tumor markers are important diagnostically and prognostically and are necessary for monitoring response to therapy.

We performed a review of the current modalities of surgical treatment of malignant ovarian germ cell tumors by clinical stages and histological types. Stage IA dysgerminoma is performed with a unilateral salpingo-oophorectomy (USO) without chemotherapy. However, for Stage IB or IC patients with dysgerminoma, USO plus chemotherapy as a primary treatment

The category of germ cell tumors includes a broad array of histologic subtypes ranging from the benign, mature teratoma to the primitive, aggressive embryonal carcinoma (Box 1). These tumors share their origin in a primordial germ cell with multipotent capacity for differentiation along a variety of pathways.

This review provides an overview of some of the recent pre-clinical and clinical developments in germ cell tumors.Recent epidemiological studies highlight the variations in the geographic and ethnic distribution of germ cell tumors and the changing incidence of seminoma versus nonseminoma in the population. Additional studies are continuing to identify
