Control of galactosyl‐sugar metabolism in relation to rate of germination

The storage sugars stachyose and raffinose (galactosyl derivatives of sucrose) are metabolized early during germination of soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] seeds. The activities of four enzymes involved in the catabolism of these sugars were monitored in soybean cotyledons and embryonic axes during a 7‐day germination period.

Improving Siberian larch seed germination rates

The flotation technique was used to segregate non-viable from viable Siberian larch (Larix Sibirica Ledeb.) seeds using water as the floating media. The non-viable seeds floated while the viable ones sank. Without stratification, the average percent germination of the floating and sunken seeds were 4.2% and 71.0% respectively.
