Species identification, distribution and abundance of Gerreidae (Teleostei) Bleeker,1859 in the estuaries of Natal [PDF]

open access: yesSouth African Journal of Zoology, 1982
Comparison of published meristic and taxonomic data with measurements taken from specimens collected from Natal estuaries have provided information for an identification key to the Gerres of southern Africa. Body markings were different on each species of fry (< 40 mm S.L.) as well as immatures and adults (> 40 mm S.L.).

Multi‐Omics Profiling of the Scaphoideus titanus Yeast‐Like Symbiont Guides the Bioinformatic Discovery of Related Fungal Symbioses in Insects

open access: yesEnvironmental Microbiology, Volume 28, Issue 7, July 2026.
Genomic, proteomic and phylogenetic analyses of the obligate yeast‐like symbiont (YLS) associated with Scaphoideus titanus revealed retained metabolic flexibility and a monophyletic origin of insect‐associated YLSs within a free‐living fungal lineage. A novel computational pipeline was used to mine NCBI transcriptomic data and identified new candidate ...

A lightweight clear liquid optical chamber baited remote underwater video system for monitoring fish in turbid coastal wetlands

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography: Methods, Volume 24, Issue 6, June 2026.
Abstract Clear liquid optical chamber baited remote underwater video systems (CLOC‐BRUV) are an effective option for assessing fish assemblages in turbid water, but current designs are limited by their large size and high operational costs. We developed a lightweight CLOC‐BRUV unit and evaluated its performance through proof‐of‐concept trials and field

The paradox of mosquito net fishing: Complex socio‐ecological trade‐offs in southwestern Madagascar

open access: yesPeople and Nature, Volume 8, Issue 6, Page 1755-1772, June 2026.
Abstract Small‐scale fisheries are vital for the livelihoods, nutrition and well‐being of millions of people in coastal regions. In many parts of the Global South, rising poverty, limited alternatives and declining resources have driven the spread of mosquito net fishing (MNF), a non‐selective practice using repurposed health‐distributed nets.
