Light pollution and ghost crab road-kill on coastal habitats

Regional Studies in Marine Science, 2020
Abstract Ghost crabs are exposed to vehicles on sandy beaches and adjacent habitats. The occurrence of individuals on coastal roads constitutes one issue to be considered for beach management at regional scales. In this context, we aimed to test whether the abundance of the ghost crab Ocypode quadrata in the road crossing a beach vegetation is ...

The cost of incline locomotion in ghost crabs (Ocypode quadrata) of different sizes

Journal of Comparative Physiology B, 2011
It is well established that the metabolic cost of horizontal locomotion decreases as a regular function of animal body mass, regardless of body form and phylogeny. How body size affects the cost of incline exercise remains much less clear. Studies on vertebrates have led to the hypotheses that the cost of vertical work is independent of body mass and ...

An organ for hearing and vibration sense in the ghost crab Ocypode

Zeitschrift fr Vergleichende Physiologie, 1971
1. The sensory basis of sound and vibration perception has been studied neurophysiologically in the ghost crab Ocypode. Experiments were carried out both on neural responses from the brains of intact animals and on nerve responses recorded from isolated walking legs. 2.

Reductions in Ghost Crab Populations Reflect Urbanization of Beaches and Dunes

Journal of Coastal Research, 2012
Abstract NORIEGA, R.; SCHLACHER, T.A., and SMEUNINX, B., 2012. Reductions in ghost crab populations reflect urbanization of beaches and dunes. Coastal management is being challenged to develop and implement measures that safeguard the ecological values of beach and dune ecosystems, particularly in urban settings.

On the rapid running of ghost crabs (Ocypode ceratophthalma)

Journal of Experimental Zoology, 1969
AbstractSpecimens of the ghost crab, O. ceratophthalma, ran at 1.825 ± 0.09 m/second on the sandy shore of the Flinders Islands and 2.33 ± 0.14 m/second on the deck of the R/V Alpha Helix. Specimens of Pachygrapus transversus ran at 0.92 ± 0.06 m/second on the ship's deck. Sex did not affect speed. O.

Influence of reproductive activity on toxicity of petroleum hydrocarbons to ghost crabs

Marine Pollution Bulletin, 1981
Abstract Reproductively active ghost crabs appear to be more susceptible to oil pollution than non-active individuals, probably as a consequence of lowered energy reserves. Uptake of hydrocarbons over the 96-h exposure periods was more or less limited to the gill tissue.

Recreational impacts on the distribution of ghost crabs Ocypode quadrata fab.

Biological Conservation, 1981
Abstract Studies were conducted at Assateague Island, Maryland-Virginia, to determine the relative number of ghost crabs Ocypode quadrata Fab. on beaches subject to different recreational uses. The mean density of crabs per 0·1 ha plots was found to be 10 on an undisturbed beach, 19 on a pedestrian-impacted beach, 1 on a light off-road vehicle (ORV ...
