Characterization of turkey and chicken ghrelin genes, and regulation of ghrelin and ghrelin receptor mRNA levels in broiler chickens

General and Comparative Endocrinology, 2006
Ghrelin, a peptide hormone produced by the stomach in mammals, stimulates growth hormone release and food intake. Recently, ghrelin was identified and characterized in chicken proventriculus and shown to stimulate growth hormone release but inhibit feed intake.

Lean mean fat reducing “ghrelin” machine: Hypothalamic ghrelin and ghrelin receptors as therapeutic targets in obesity

Neuropharmacology, 2010
Obesity has reached epidemic proportions not only in Western societies but also in the developing world. Current pharmacological treatments for obesity are either lacking in efficacy and/or are burdened with adverse side effects. Thus, novel strategies are required.

Homodimerization and Heterodimerization of the Ghrelin Receptor

2014
Ghrelin triggers different metabolic and behavioral effects. This suggests that the GHSR may act synergistically with other families of receptors. Two isoforms of GHSR have been identified, i.e., GHSR-1a and GHSR-1b. Only GHSR-1a is the active form and transduces ghrelin signal.
