The Giardia lamblia genome

International Journal for Parasitology, 2000
Giardia lamblia is a protozoan parasite of humans and other mammals that is thought to be one of the most primitive extant eukaryotic organisms. Although distinctly eukaryotic, it is notable for its lack of mitochondria, nucleoli, and perixosomes. It has been suggested that Giardia spp.

Antigenic Variation in Giardia lamblia

Experimental Parasitology, 1989
Giardia lamblia undergo surface antigenic variation in vitro and in vivo. The presence of variant trophozoites can be detected in clones after exposure to cytotoxic monoclonal antibodies. Surviving Giardia (progeny) no longer possess the initial major surface antigen which is replaced by new antigens.

Giardia lamblia: Isolation of RNA

Experimental Parasitology, 1989
In this study we report the isolation of RNA from two strains of the parasitic protozoan Giardia lamblia: Pl and WB. In order to detect all rRNA populations present in this parasite, we used three different methods to isolate total RNA. These included phenolchloroform extraction (Brawerman 1974), guanidine isothiocyanate extraction (Chirgwin et al ...

Ultrastructure of the Cyst of Giardia Lamblia

The American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, 1977
An isolation technique involving filtration and discontinuous density gradient centrifugation was utilized for obtaining Giardia lamblia cysts from human feces. Highly concentrated preparations of cysts were examined by electron microscopy. The cyst of G. lamblia is surrounded by a moderately dense fibrous wall 0.3 mum thick.

Genetic manipulation of Giardia lamblia

Molecular and Biochemical Parasitology, 2002
Giardia lamblia is a flagellated protozoan that infects several species including humans and is a major agent of waterborne outbreaks of diarrhea. G. lamblia is also important in the study of basic eukaryotic molecular biology and evolution; however, it has been difficult to employ standard genetic methods in the study of Giardia. Over the past 6 years,

Chromosome rearrangements in Giardia lamblia

Parasitology Today, 1994
Recent studies have shown that the genome of Giardia lamblia is plastic. Clinical isolates exhibit extensive karyotypic heterogeneity and chromosome rearrangements occur frequently, in vitro. In this review, Sylvie Le Blancq looks at genome organization and the impact of DNA rearrangement events.
