Why Autonomous Vehicles Are Not Ready Yet: A Multi‐Disciplinary Review of Problems, Attempted Solutions, and Future Directions

open access: yesJournal of Field Robotics, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Personal autonomous vehicles can sense their surrounding environment, plan their route, and drive with little or no involvement of human drivers. Despite the latest technological advancements and the hopeful announcements made by leading entrepreneurs, to date no personal vehicle is approved for road circulation in a “fully” or “semi ...

Terrain Classification for Planetary Rovers Using Wireless In‐Wheel Sensor Modules and Machine Learning

open access: yesJournal of Field Robotics, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Safe and reliable mobility over different kinds of ground is important for planetary rovers on space missions. Since terrain changes might affect the mobility of the rover, energy consumption, and safety, detecting the type of ground in real‐time is vital.

An autonomous network of acoustic detectors to map tiger risk by eavesdropping on prey alarm calls

open access: yesRemote Sensing in Ecology and Conservation, EarlyView.
Tiger population recovery brings with it increased fatalities from human‐tiger conflict. We describe a network of autonomous intelligent passive acoustic sensors that monitor the forest for deer alarm calls as a proxy for tiger risk and provide a risk map to local communities in real‐time.

A straightforward machine learning-based giga-cycle fatigue life regression approach for polymer matrix composites

open access: yesResults in Engineering
Fatigue experiments, even during the design phase and material selection for composite structures, are time-consuming. Recently, machine learning (ML) models have shown a strong potential to predict fatigue life.

Deep Learning for Endoscopic Classification of Adenoid Hypertrophy

open access: yesWorld Journal of Otorhinolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective Endoscopy is a convenient and widely used method to evaluate adenoid size, but the subjectivity of its image diagnosis can result in over‐ or underestimation. To create a new assessment strategy for adenoid hypertrophy, we developed a reliable method for automated classification using a deep learning algorithm with nasal endoscopic ...

Assessing physiological, behavioral and movement responses to Suprelorin implant delivery methods in free‐ranging eastern grey kangaroos Macropus giganteus

open access: yesWildlife Biology, EarlyView.
Overabundant populations of eastern grey kangaroos Macropus giganteus in peri‐urban areas pose ecological and social challenges. Current management strategies are often hindered by animal welfare and logistical concerns. This study aimed to assess stress responses of kangaroos to two contraceptive delivery methods.

Dynamic Facial Expression Recognition of Learners via Adaptive Global Attention and Differential Temporal Transformer

open access: yesCAAI Transactions on Intelligence Technology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Analysing learners' facial expressions during learning and exploring their learning processes and emotional changes are of great significance for assisting teachers' teaching and promoting smart education. In complex learning environments, static facial expression recognition fails to capture the dynamic changes of learners' expressions losing

Spin‐contrast‐variation small‐angle neutron scattering study of fully and partially swollen silica‐filled rubber

open access: yesJournal of Applied Crystallography, EarlyView.
We have elucidated the polymer adsorption layer structure in filler–rubber systems by conducting spin‐contrast‐variation small‐angle neutron scattering on partially and fully swollen filler–rubber samples with and without a silane coupling agent. We have elucidated the polymer adsorption layer structure in filler–rubber systems by conducting spin ...
