Use of floated gillnet to reduce flatfish bycatch in a mixed-species gillnet fishery

open access: yesEstuarine, Coastal and Shelf Science
Bycatch of threatened flatfish species is a major concern in mixed-species bottom-set gillnet fisheries in the Yellow Sea, China. Therefore, we tested floated gillnets against standard bottom-set gillnets to reduce bycatch by exploiting difference in species-specific fish behavior.

A half century of monitoring reveals contrasting survival responses of Icelandic seabirds to climate and fisheries pressures

open access: yesIbis, EarlyView.
Seabirds serve as key indicators of marine environmental changes, with adult survival being a critical parameter for assessing population health. Iceland hosts some of the largest seabird populations in the North Atlantic, making it a valuable location for studying long‐term trends in seabird demographics.

What are the main local drivers determining richness and fishery yields in tropical coastal fish assemblages?

open access: yesZoologia (Curitiba), 2018
Seasonal ecological effects caused by temperature and photoperiod are typically considered minimal in the tropics. Nevertheless, annual climate cycles may still influence the distribution and abundance of tropical species.

A Mixed-Method Approach for Quantifying Illegal Fishing and Its Impact on an Endangered Fish Species. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2015
Illegal harvest is recognized as a widespread problem in natural resource management. The use of multiple methods for quantifying illegal harvest has been widely recommended yet infrequently applied. We used a mixed-method approach to evaluate the extent,

Estimation of production trend of the depik, Rasbora tawarensis (Teleostei, Cyprinidae), in Lake Laut Tawar, Indonesia [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
The objective of the present study was to evaluate the production trend of the depik (Rasbora tawarensis) during the last two decades in Lake Laut Tawar. The production trend was examined based on the catch per unit efforts.

Mortality of discards from southeastern Australian beach seines and gillnets [PDF]

open access: yesDiseases of Aquatic Organisms, 2008
Two experiments were done in an Australian estuary to quantify the mortalities and contributing factors for key species discarded during 8 and 9 deployments of commercial beach (or shore) seines and gillnets, respectively. In both experiments, bycatches (2347 individuals comprising 16 species) were handled according to conventional practices and ...

Giants in the cold: Morphological evidence for vascular heat retention in the viscera but not the skeletal muscle of the basking shark (Cetorhinus maximus)

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract Fewer than 50 of the over 30,000 extant species of fishes have developed anatomical specializations facilitating endothermy in specific body regions. The plankton‐feeding basking shark (Cetorhinus maximus), traditionally classified as an ectotherm, was recently shown to have regionally endothermic traits such as centralized red muscle (RM ...

Genes, fish and fisheries: translating science into policy

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract The 2024 Annual Symposium of the Fisheries Society of the British Isles reviewed the burgeoning impact of ‘omics’ technologies on fish ecology, management and forecasting. As with life sciences more generally, major advances in speed, cost‐effectiveness and breadth of applications in ‘omics’ has had profound societal and environmental impacts.

Distribution modelling for Neotropical freshwater stingrays Potamotrygon brachyura and Potamotrygon motoro (Myliobatiformes, Potamotrygonidae) in the Uruguay River basin

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract This study aimed to identify geographical distribution patterns of the giant short‐tailed river stingray Potamotrygon brachyura and the motoro stingray Potamotrygon motoro in the Uruguay River basin. Data on presence/absence of stingrays were based on fishers' knowledge accessed by interviews through expeditions in Brazil, Argentina and ...
