Quality Determinants of Gillnet-Caught Alaska Salmon

Journal of Aquatic Food Product Technology, 2017
In 2010 and 2011, researchers in Bristol Bay, Alaska followed nearly 22,000 tagged sockeye salmon that were caught by 86 selected gillnet boats and delivered unfrozen to tenders anchored out on the...

MODIFYING GILLNETS TO REDUCE ENTANGLEMENT OF CETACEANS

Marine Mammal Science, 1991
AbstractTo reduce the number of cetaceans caught incidentally in gillnets, two forms of acoustic modifications have previously been proposed. These modifications seek to make gillnets more obvious to cetaceans so they can avoid them, and include making gillnets more reflective to cetacean sonar and placing active sound emitters in the nets.

Location-specific consequences of beach seine and gillnet capture on upriver-migrating sockeye salmon migration behavior and fate

Canadian Journal of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences, 2018
Fish released after capture, or fish interacting with gear but escaping, sometimes experience fishing-related incidental mortality (FRIM). For adult Pacific salmon migrations, knowing the magnitude of FRIM is important to estimate escapement accurately ...

GILLNET SELECTIVITY AND FACTORS AFFECTING SELECTIVITY

2014

Tiger Shark Bycatch in Gillnets

Tiger Sharks has a global distribution. Fishing practices have become more widespread and careless. Fishermen are abandoning gillnets resulting in bycatch of many marine animals including Tiger Sharks resulting in a decline in their population. The types of gear used is a primary factor in the number of shark bycatch numbers (Oliver, et.al 2015).

Gillnets: Gear Design, Fishing Performance and Conservation Challenges

Marine Technology Society Journal, 2006
Worldwide, the gillnet is one of the most important fishing gears for harvesting a variety of species in the sea and in freshwater. Gillnets are efficient, catching a diverse range of species, and are highly size selective. However, gillnets have limited species selectivity and sometimes catch non-target species; birds; and megafauna species including
