A Gillnet Fishery Considered as an Experiment in Artificial Selection
Journal of the Fisheries Research Board of Canada, 1977Temporal patterns of change in growth, condition, and mean age of samples of lake whitefish (Coregonus clupeaformis) taken from Lesser Slave Lake, Alberta, during 1941–75 are described. Growth rate and condition have declined, while mean age has increased. Gillnet fisheries are highly selective of large, heavy, fast-growing individuals, and we suggest

Catch and bycatch in U.S. Southeast gillnet fisheries, 2013.
2014The Southeast Gillnet Observer Program has adapted to the changes of the Florida- Georgia shark gillnet fishery since the program began in 1993 (e.g. Carlson and Bethea 2007 and references therein, Mathers et al. 2013). There are currently about 500 total directed and incidental shark permits issued in the US Atla ntic and Gulf of Mexico, while the ...

A commercial fisheries production function : the Skeena River sockey salmon gillnet fishery
2011The production functions commonly suggested in the fishery bio-economic literature are reviewed, and modifications are suggested to take into account direct and indirect gear externalities and gear saturation effects in a salmon gillnet fishery. This suggests a daily production function of the Cobb-Douglas variety, tested on Skeena River sockeye salmon

Ecological Applications, 2015
Fisheries bycatch is a global threat to marine megafauna. Environmental laws require bycatch assessment for protected species, but this is difficult when bycatch is rare. Low bycatch rates, combined with low observer coverage, may lead to biased, imprecise estimates when using standard ratio estimators.

The lobster fishery with gillnets in the Eastern Adriatic
Rapports et procès verbaux des réunions - Commission internationale pour lNULLexploration scientifique de la mer Méditerranée, 2001Lobster fishery in the Eastern Adriatic should be performed with pots and lobster gillnets, but other gillnets and trammel nets are also used. Influence of gillnets, with inadequate mesh size, on lobster has been evaluated according to length frequency of caught lobsters, percentage of immature specimens, sex ratio and length-weight relationship ...

Studies on Echolocation of Porpoises Taken in Salmon Gillnet Fisheries
1990In the Bering Sea, marine mammals, particularly Dall’s porpoises, Phocoenoides dalli, get incidentally entangled in gillnets of the Japanese mothership salmon fishery. The maximum total number of Dall’s porpoises to be caught in a year was fixed by U.S. law.

The incidental catch of seabirds in gillnet fisheries: A global review
Biological Conservation, 2013Based on bird feeding ecology we identified 148 seabird species as susceptible to bycatch in gillnets, of which 81 have been recorded caught. The highest densities of susceptible species occur in temperate and sub-polar regions of both hemispheres, with lower densities in tropical regions.
