Maternal chitosan oligosaccharide intervention optimizes the production performance and health status of gilts and their offspring

open access: yesAnimal Nutrition, 2020
Chitosan oligosaccharides (COS) are the hydrolyzed product of chitosan and have multifunctional health benefits. The objective of this study was to elucidate the effect of COS as a dietary supplement to gilts on their productivity and health and that of ...

Spatiotemporal and quantitative analyses of phosphoinositides – fluorescent probe—and mass spectrometry‐based approaches

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Fluorescent probes allow dynamic visualization of phosphoinositides in living cells (left), whereas mass spectrometry provides high‐sensitivity, isomer‐resolved quantitation (right). Their synergistic use captures complementary aspects of lipid signaling. This review illustrates how these approaches reveal the spatiotemporal regulation and quantitative

Tau acetylation at K331 has limited impact on tau pathology in vivo

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We mapped tau post‐translational modifications in humanized MAPT knock‐in mice and in amyloid‐bearing double knock‐in mice. Acetylation within the repeat domain, particularly around K331, showed modest increases under amyloid pathology. To test functional relevance, we generated MAPTK331Q knock‐in mice.

Steroidome and metabolome analysis in gilt saliva to identify potential biomarkers of boar effect receptivity

open access: yesAnimal, 2021
Optimal management of gilt reproduction requires oestrus synchronization. Hormonal treatments are used for this purpose, but there is a growing demand for non-hormonal alternatives, especially in organic farms. The boar effect is an important alternative

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Epigenetic blind spots – the role of DNA methylation dynamics in stem cell‐based models of embryogenesis

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Embryo‐like structures (stembryos) are an innovative tool, but they are hindered by experimental variability and limited developmental potential. DNA methylation is crucial for mammalian development, but its status in stembryo models is poorly characterized.

Successful lactation induction in non‐pregnant gilts [PDF]

open access: yes, 2023
: A protocol to induce lactation was applied to non-pregnant gilts. In Experiment I, five gilts with oestrus synchronized through oral supplementation of 20 mg altrenogest for 18 days received: 10 mg oestradiol cypionate (EC) on the last day of oestrous ...

Septin 9 PB domains coordinate centrosome positioning and microtubule acetylation to control epithelial polarity

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Septin 9 polybasic domains couple phosphoinositide‐rich membrane binding to centrosome positioning, Golgi organization, and microtubule acetylation to control epithelial polarity. Their loss disrupts this axis, causing centrosome mispositioning, Golgi fragmentation, reduced microtubule acetylation, and polarity inversion via upregulation of the ...

Maternal cholecalciferol supplementation during gestation improves antioxidant capacities in gilts and piglets

open access: yesItalian Journal of Animal Science, 2021
Various studies have evaluated the relationship between cholecalciferol (vitamin D3) and reproductive performance. This study aimed at investigating the effects of maternal D3 supplementation during gestation on reproductive performance and antioxidant ...

Influence of the Level of Sex Hormones in the Blood of Gilts on Slaughter Characteristics and Meat Quality

open access: yesAnimals, 2023
The aim of the conducted research was to determine the impact of factors such as sex hormone levels, which vary during gilts’ reproductive cycle, on the quality of the obtained meat and slaughter characteristics of the processed gilts.
