An axiomatization of the Gini coefficient
Mathematical Social Sciences, 1982Abstract This paper deals with the axiomatization of the Gini coefficient in the general case, i.e. it characterizes its cardinal properties in ranking income distributions whose aggregate incomes and populations are not necessarily the same. An axiomatization of an index asymptotically equal to the Gini coefficient is also given.

The Discovery of the Gini Coefficient
History of Political Economy, 2021This article traces the development of the methods of representing the degree of income inequality that were developed in the early twentieth century by Max Otto Lorenz and Corrado Gini. It suggests that Gini’s efforts to perfect the Lorenz curve may well have facilitated his discovery of what came to be known as the Gini coefficient and argues that ...

A Demarcation of the Gini Coefficient
SSRN Electronic JournalWe specify the domain in the income distribution that includes the people to whom income transfers will not increase inequality in that income distribution. Inspired by Sen's (1973, 1997) characterization of the Gini coefficient as a ratio between a measure of aggregate income-based "depression" (stress) and aggregate income, we inquire as to whether ...

THE GINI COEFFICIENT'S APPLICATION TO GENERAL COMPLEX NETWORKS [PDF]
The Gini coefficient, which was originally used in microeconomics to describe income inequality, is introduced into the research of general complex networks as a metric on the heterogeneity of network structure. Some parameters such as degree exponent and degree-rank exponent were already defined in the case of scale-free networks also as a metric on ...

Gini coefficients, which measure gross inequalities rather than their unfair components, are often used as proxy measures of absolute or relative distributive injustice in Western societies. This presupposes that the fair inequalities in these societies are small and stable enough to be ignored.

On the Interpretation and Disaggregation of Gini Coefficients
The Economic Journal, 1976Problems of inequality related to the disaggregation of Gini coefficients are examined. Measures of inequality can be decomposed so that in a grouped population, total inequality depends on inequality within and between groups. No such decomposition is available for the Gini coefficient, yet its direct relationship to the Lorenz curve has resulted in ...
