This chapter considers Jane Austen’s role in arguments about the Victorian Woman Question. At the end of the nineteenth century, critics of the New Woman frequently positioned Jane Austen—both her life and writings—as a model of the idealized “Angel in the House” femininity that the New Woman threatened to overturn.
